COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Jared Laskin lifted the Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team to a 14-13 win in overtime over Kean behind his game-winning goal on Friday night at Patterson Field in non-conference action.
The win is the third straight for the Bears to improve their record to 3-2 while the Cougars fell to 3-3 overall.
Senior
Chris Bryant got the scoring started early as he gave the Bears their initial 1-0 lead at the 13:02-mark of the first quarter. Junior
Daniel Kupiec snuck one by the Cougars goalkeeper at the 9:06-mark following a Kean goal to put the Bears up 2-1 before Kean responded with back-to-back goals to go up 3-2. Ursinus countered with back-to-back goals of their own from seniors
Harry Sweitzer and
Nick Fareno to give them a 4-3 lead with 2:40 left in the first quarter. Sweitzer broke loose twice to open the second quarter after Kean had tied the game late in the first and gave the Bears a 6-4 lead with 10:17 left in the first half. Sophomore
Daniel Rice capped the run by scoring on his own and giving Ursinus a 7-4 lead with 9:36 left in the second quarter. Kean pulled within 7-6 with two straight goals, but the Bears ended the half on some momentum by answering with two goals to go up 9-6. Rice scored his second and senior
Lars Homan beat the buzzer with .4 seconds left for the Bears ninth goal.
The Cougars got back into the game in the third quarter as they shrugged off a fury of Bears shots to score two straight goals to make it 9-8 at the 5:26-mark. Kupiec knocked one in during the final minute of the third quarter before the Cougars quickly tied the game at 10 after netting two goals in the first 1:45 of the fourth quarter. Kean took the lead back for the first time since the opening quarter when they scored at the 10:08-mark until Rice tied it at 11 just under two minutes later. Kean took the lead back at 12-11 with 5:37 left in regulation, however, the Bears rattled off two goals in a 31-second span to go up 13-12 at the 2:13-mark. Kupiec initially tied it with a turnaround shot at the 2:43-mark and senior
Barrett Denlinger put the Bears ahead on a quick rush from a clear. Ursinus won the ensuing faceoff and had a shot saved with 1:04 left to gain a fresh 60-second shot clock. However, a turnover gave the Cougars their first chance to tie. Kean had a shot saved but were given extra life following an errant pass out of bounds by the Bears on a clear attempt. The Cougars cashed in on their second chance by tying the game with eight seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, the Cougars won the opening faceoff but junior
Greg Belville broke up a pass in front to cause a turnover. Laskin had his initial shot go wide before Homan kept the Bears alive with a ground ball. With the shot clock under 10 seconds, Laskin broke inside off his defender and snuck inside wide open to beat the goalie 1-on-1 to deliver the record for the Bears.
The Bears held a 50-31 shot advantage for the game but just a 25-20 advantage in shots on goal. Ursinus held a 45-29 advantage in ground balls and a 19-11 edge in faceoff wins. Sophomore goalkeeper
Colin Daroch made seven saves to earn the win in the full 61:46 while John Westbrook suffered the loss for Kean in relief after making seven saves in 31:46.
Rice led the Bears with four points on three goals and one assist while Laskin and Homan posted the same stat line of three points off two assists and one goal. Sweitzer and Kupiec both tallied three goals in the win.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, March 14th as they will host Stockton at 12:00 p.m.
