Baseball's Offense Erupts for 19 Runs Against Haverford

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team erupted for 19 runs en route to a 19-7 victory over Haverford College on Tuesday evening at Thomas Field.

With the victory, Ursinus improves to 18-12 on the season and 5-6 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Fords fall to 10-18 overall and 4-7 in conference play. The Bears' 19 runs marked their most in a game since a 24-2 victory over the University of Valley Forge in April 2025.

Sophomores Luke Kopec and Isaac Gesford led the way offensively for Ursinus, combining to go 7-for-9 with seven RBIs and six runs scored. Gesford went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, while Kopec finished 3-for-5, hitting his team-leading fourth home run of the season and adding three RBIs. First-year Brett Barrett and junior Brandon Sullivan each added three hits and three runs scored, while senior Shane Beaver contributed two hits, including a two-run home run.

The Bears' offense jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on five hits and one error. Sullivan led off with a double down the left-field line, and a single by sophomore Matthew Callahan put runners on the corners with no outs. After a strikeout, Callahan stole second, and a throwing error by the Fords' catcher allowed Sullivan to score and give Ursinus a one-run lead. Barrett then followed with his first of two RBI triples to plate Callahan, and an RBI single by Gesford extended the lead to 3-0. After a fielder's choice, senior Kyle Rosenfeld stole second, allowing Gesford to swipe home and make it 4-0.

Haverford answered with a run in the second and a solo home run in the third to trim the deficit to 4-2, but Ursinus responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Kopec led off the inning with a solo home run to left on a 1-0 pitch. Barrett followed with his second triple of the game down the right-field line, and Gesford added his second RBI single to extend the lead to four.

Haverford put two runners on with one out in the fourth, but sophomore pitcher Alex Grehawick induced a 4-6-3 double play to escape the jam. The Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 10-2. Kopec and Gesford each delivered RBI singles, senior George Nestor drew a bases-loaded walk, and first-year Nolan Carroll added an RBI bunt single to cap the inning.

The Fords responded with a five-run fifth inning, capitalizing on four hits and two walks to cut the deficit to 10-7. In the sixth, sophomore pitcher Chase Martin entered with two runners on and the tying run at the plate with one out. Martin struck out his first batter before inducing a groundout to escape the threat.

Ursinus broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning, scoring nine runs on four hits and two errors to take a 19-7 lead. After three straight walks, an error, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Sullivan extended the lead to 13-7. Sullivan then stole second, and a throwing error by the catcher allowed Carroll to score from third. Leading 14-7, Kopec tripled to left-center to score two runs, and Barrett added a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.

Martin closed out the game on the mound, working around a pair of singles and inducing consecutive groundouts to secure the 19-7 victory in seven innings. Martin (3-2) earned the win in relief, allowing two hits over 1 2/3 innings while striking out two.

Ursinus returns to action Friday, April 17th, looking to complete the season sweep at Haverford College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
