Women’s Lacrosse Rally Falls Short vs. Washington College

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's lacrosse team used a third-quarter surge to even the contest but was eventually upended by Washington College, 17-13, on Monday evening at Patterson Field.
 
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 7-5 on the season and 1-2 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
 
Sophomore Devin Buggy led the Bears' offense with a career-high five goals, pushing her season total to 27. Buggy has scored in eight straight contests and in 12 of 13 games this season. Junior Dana DeSiato finished with a team-high seven points on one goal and six assists and now has 41 assists this season, which ranks fourth in Division III. Classmate Jaime Michaud added five points on three goals and two assists, while senior Ashley Noto scored her 100th career goal, becoming the 25th player in program history to reach the milestone.
 
On the defensive side, senior Sophia Curtis caused three turnovers and collected a team-high four ground balls. Sophomore Jeremi Morrison added two caused turnovers and a team-high eight draw controls, while Michaud contributed three ground balls and seven draw controls.
 
Ursinus grabbed an early 1-0 lead just 47 seconds into the contest as Michaud scored at the 14:13 mark. Washington College answered with three straight goals before Michaud found Buggy for her first score with 7:48 remaining in the opening quarter. On the play, Michaud hit Buggy cutting through the crease, and she fired a shot towards the far post for the goal.
 
The Shorewomen responded with back-to-back goals to push their lead to 5-2, but a 3-0 Ursinus run closed out the period with the score tied at five. DeSiato assisted Michaud and senior Meghan Vizian on goals before junior Whitney Hershey converted a free-position attempt to even the score.
 
Washington College capitalized on a pair of turnovers to open the second quarter, scoring four straight goals to take an 9-5 lead with 8:14 remaining in the first half. The Bears responded with three of the final four goals of the half to trim the deficit to 10-8 at the break. Buggy started the run at the 3:26 mark, converting on a woman-up opportunity, while Michaud's second goal came with 2:11 remaining to make it 9-7. After a Washington College goal, Buggy tallied her third of the game with 51 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to two.
 
Ursinus controlled possession through the first seven minutes of the third quarter, scoring three straight goals to take an 11-10 lead, their first advantage since the opening goal. Buggy started the scoring with her fourth of the game before Noto's 100th career goal tied the score at 10 with 9:37 remaining. Less than a minute later, DeSiato assisted junior Ryann Buchner on a woman-up goal to give Ursinus an 11-10 lead.
 
Washington College scored the final goal of the quarter at the 2:53 mark, sending the game into the fourth tied at 11. DeSiato opened the final period with a goal, but a 6-1 run by the Shorewomen closed out the contest and resulting in the 17-13 victory.
 
Washington College held a 42-40 edge in shots and a 28-18 advantage in ground balls, while Ursinus led 18-14 in draw controls. The Bears converted 59% (13-for-22) of their clear attempts, while the Shorewomen finished at 70% (14-for-20). Washington College's Maddy Kissinger earned the win in goal with 15 saves, while first-year Addi Guthrie-Pimpinella took the loss despite a career-high 12 stops.
 
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, April 15th, traveling to Swarthmore College for the Anita Deasey Memorial Cup at 7 p.m.
