MADISON, N.J. – An offensive outbreak powered the Ursinus women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium to kick off the Drew Fall Festival.
With the victory, Ursinus has won three straight contests and improves to 3-1 overall, while the Golden Wolves fall to 1-2-1 on the season. First-year
Alexis Whaley opened the scoring for the Bears, recording her third career goal after scoring twice in the Bears' victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday. Seniors
Gwyn Krystkiewicz and
Ellie Frank, along with sophomores
Chelsea Renna and
Abby Godown, each added their first goals of the season for the Bears.
Both teams traded shots through the opening 15 minutes until junior
Kaleigh Evans assisted Whaley on the game's opening goal in the 17th minute to give Ursinus an early 1-0 lead. In the 24th minute, Krystkiewicz capitalized on a penalty kick to net her fifth career goal and extend the Bears' lead to two. The Bears' offense kept the pressure on the Golden Wolves' back line, scoring their third goal in the 32nd minute off an assist by sophomore
Cora Kim to Godown to push the Bears' lead to three entering halftime.
Ursinus carried the momentum into the second half, firing the first three shots of the period but were turned away to keep the lead at three. In the 64th minute, Renna recorded her first collegiate goal to push the Bears' lead to four with 25:48 remaining in the contest. The Bears were awarded a corner kick in the 65th minute before Frank capitalized on a scoring opportunity at the 65:42 mark to stretch the Ursinus lead to 5-0. Alvernia tallied a late goal in the 84th minute from Kyla Lytle, but the Bears earned the 5-1 victory.
The Bears held a 15-7 lead in shots, a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. First-year goalie
Lexie Albaeck earned her first career victory in her first collegiate start, playing 73 minutes. Fellow first-year
Vic Hiotis recorded a career-high three saves in 17 minutes of play. Alvernia's Ava Schmidt suffered the loss in goal for the Golden Wolves, recording a game-high four saves.
The Bears will return to action on Sunday as they take on Drew University at 3:30 p.m. to complete the Drew Fall Festival at Ranger Stadium.
