ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus college women's volleyball team competed in the Elizabethtown Tri-Match against York and the host Blue Jays on Friday evening.
Against the Spartans, junior
Molly Stevenson and first-year
Nayda Bookman tied for the team lead with 10 kills apiece while Stevenson recorded a career-high 20 digs for a kill-dig double-double. Senior
Alexa Mazzeo registered a career-high 21 digs and sophomore
Mackenzie Nardone recorded 21 assists and seven digs.
The Bears fell in a 2-0 deficit hole which included losing advantages of 22-17 and 23-21 in the second set. Ursinus battled back in the third set as they took an early 6-4 lead and ripped off four straight points to go up 12-9. The Spartans tied the set at 12 before the Bears won seven of the next nine points to go up 19-14. York won three straight to pull within 19-17 until the Bears closed the set out by taking six of the last eight points to force a fourth set. In the fourth set, the Bears led 16-14 before York went up 19-16 with five straight points and later broke open a 21-all tie to end the match.
Against the Blue Jays, first-year
Madison Small registered a career-high 13 kills while Nardone paced the Bears offense again with 17 assists. Junior
Kayce Titus added 13 assists while Mazzeo once again led the Bears in digs with 15.
It was déjà vu for the Bears as they once again faced a 2-0 match deficit but battled back early in the third set by tying things at four early on after trailing 3-0. Ursinus went up 10-8 and eventually to 14-11 following an ace from first-year
Ashlyn Oessenick. Ursinus went up 19-15 before the Blue Jays won six of the next seven points to go up 21-20. However, the Bears took advantage of multiple Elizabethtown errors and forced a fourth set by winning the third 25-22 that was ended on an ace from Nardone. Ursinus held tough in the fourth set and trailed 12-11 after overcoming an early deficit. However, the Blue Jays won six of the next seven points to take control of the set at 18-12 and the Bears got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, September 8th as they will travel to face Stockton at 5:00 p.m.
