Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's
lacrosse team won its Centennial opener on Saturday, downing
McDaniel 7-4.
The Bears (5-2, 1-0 Centennial) led by as many as six with 10:25
left, before McDaniel scored three goals in the final 6:31.
For Ursinus, senior midfielder Elizabeth Cannon
(Garrison, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) finished with two
goals and three assists, while junior attack Lindsay Urban
(Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had two goals.
Ursinus took an early 1-0 lead with 17:54 left as sophomore
midfielder Kim Peifer (Collegeville,
Pa./Methacton) scored on a free position shot. McDaniel
tied the score at 1-all when freshman midfielder Paige Messersmith
scored on an assist from senior attack Sarah Mintz with 13:32 left.
The Bears then went on a 6-0 scoring run to put the game out of
reach. Cannon scored her first goal of the game at 8:38 off of an
assist from senior attack Amy Sezack (Mount Laurel,
N.J./Lenape) for a 2-1 lead. Junior midfielder
Emily Hummel (Lumberton, N.J./Moorestown Friends)
then scored on a Cannon assist with 6:33 left for a 3-1 lead,
followed by a Cannon assist on a goal from junior midfielder
Allison Furman (Glibertsville, Pa./Boyertown) with
2:04 left for a 4-1 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Urban scored her first goal of the game just
2:22 in on a free position shot for a 5-1 lead. The lead increased
to 6-1 with 17:33 left as Cannon scored unassisted. The final goal
of the run came from Urban with 10:25 left on an assist from
Cannon.
In goal, senior goalkeeper Alex McBride (Sewell,
N.J./Washington Township) made 11 saves. Furman finished
with three groundballs, while senior defender Cindy Taylor
(Schwenksville, Pa./Boyertown) had three caused turnovers.
Ursinus will host Haverford on Wednesday night.
