Women's Lacrosse drops close, 8-7 contest to Cabrini

Box Score

COLLEGVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team opened the game with a five-goal run over the opening 10 minutes but could not hang on as visiting Cabrini College rallied for the 8-7 win Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Freshman attack Taylor DeBernardi (Springfield, Pa. / Springfield) led the Bears (0-5) with three goals, while junior midfielder Mary Deliberti (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield Ludlowe), sophomore midfielder Amy Kohout (West Deptford, N.J. / Gloucester Catholic) and freshman attack Julia Fleming (Glenside, Pa. / Penn Charter) added one goal and one assist each. Flemming also accounted for a game-high five draw controls.

Senior midfielders Sarah Means and Melissa Scanzano both scored a pair of goals to lead the Cavaliers (2-4), while senior defender Bree Thompson added one goal with one assist.

Cabrini called its second time out of the game following DeBernardi's second goal of the game 9:11 into the contest, and things settled down for the Cavaliers from there as  Scanzano scored twice in the final 14:11 of the first half to cut Ursinus' lead to 5-2 at the half. Deliberti found the back of the net in the final minute of the opening period, only to have the goal taken off the board for an illegal stick.

The two teams traded scores to start the second half before sophomore midfielder Allie Vallen started a five-goal Cabrini run that was capped by the eventual game-winner from senior midfielder Lacie Doubet with 8:05 remaining in the contest.

DeBernardi scored her second of the game with just under three minutes left to pull the Bears back within one, but that proved to be the final score of the game as the Cavaliers went on to control the ball for most of the remaining time in the contest.

Junior goalie Margaret Philbin (Danbury, Conn. / Ridgefield) had an impressive 18 saves in goal for Ursinus, while sophomore goalie Megan Barlow had five stops in goal for Cabrini.

The Bears return to action Wednesday when they host Widener University.
