Women's Lax Drops Season Opener

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa. - The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team went down 8-2 in the opening half  and was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 12-5 in its opener to Cabrini on Thursday.

The Bears got a pair of goals from Grace Langen while Haley O'Malley, Hannah Reape, and Rachel Dunne each scored as well.

The Cavaliers (2-0) got an early jump on the Bears, scoring just 58 seconds into the contest, and then added a goal 14 seconds later on a free position shot to go up 2-0. Langen answered eight seconds later to slice the deficit to 2-1.

That was followed by five consecutive Cabrini goals before the Bears finally stopped the run on a goal by O'Malley.

Down 8-2 after the first 30 minutes, the Bears came out much stronger in the second half, scoring the first two goals of the second. Reape put one in the back of the net on a free-position shot before Langen did the same five minutes later to record her sixth career multiple-goal game and cut the Cavaliers' lead to 8-4. Langen led the team offensively with five shots.

The Bears' two goals to open the half were followed by four straight goals from Cabrini. Ursinus got a goal from Dunne with 6:19 remaining on a free position shot to conclude the 12-5 loss.

Ursinus was outshot by Cabrini 37-13 and had 25 turnovers to the Cavaliers' six.

Making her debut in net, Alexa Machado tallied an impressive 14 saves on 26 shots faced.

Becca Lewis was sensational in defense, registering five caused turnovers and scooping up five ground balls. Both were career highs for the sophomore, who had three caused turnovers in the entire 2019 campaign.

Krasutsky produced six draw controls, helping the Bears come within 10-9 of the Cavaliers in the circle. The junior also caused two turnovers and assisted on Langen's opening marker.

Julie Cherneskie (2 DC, 1 GB), Paige Weidman (2 GB), Emma Wood (1 DC), and Katie Cressman joined Machado in making their collegiate debuts.

The Bears play their home opener next Wednesday against Rowan at 4 p.m.
