COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College wrestling team hosted their annual Racich Rumble and earned a 6
th place finish accumulating 86.5 points on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears had four members earn top-five finishes as seniors
Terry Adams and
Shawn Marchesano collected third-place finishes. First-year
Nils Updale impressed throughout the afternoon collecting a third-place finish, while senior
Romeo Rodriguez earned a fifth-place finish.
"We had a strong performance and a lot of positives today at one of the toughest D3 tournaments on the east coast," Head Coach
Joe Jamison said. "It was surely an improvement from last week and something to build on. We're putting these guys through the ringer right now and it'll payoff come late February."
At 125lbs, Adams won his opening match via a tech fall (21-6) and moved to the semifinals with a 16-5 major decision over Cortland's Justin Amendola. After falling in the semifinals, Adams won his next two matches, including a pinfall in the consolation championship during the second period. Sophomore
Franco Mazza went 2-2 at 125lbs including back-to-back falls in the consolations.
At 141lbs, Rodriguez opened with three consecutive decisions to advance to the semifinals. Rodriguez dropped his next two matches but won via a medical forfeit in the 5
th place match. First-year
Jacob Sheiner impressed throughout the afternoon earning three victories. In the consolations, Sheiner defeated Alvernia's Kevin Rainey via a fall in just two minutes and 19 seconds and followed it up with a 15-8 decision over Saint John Fisher's Zachary Ash.
At 149lbs, junior
Dante Monaco wrapped up his season debut with a 3-2 record. Monaco dropped his opening match but bounced back in the consolations with three consecutive victories. Monaco earned back-to-back pinfalls over New York University's Jack Garcia and York's Clinton Patzke. He advanced to the consolation of four after defeating Alvernia's Chance Babb 16-9.
Stone Franczyk produced similar results at 157lbs finishing with a 3-2 record in his season debut. Franczyk won his opening match via a pinfall and earned two more victories in the consolations.
Marchesano continued to build off his stellar start to 2022, earning a 5-1 record at 165lbs. He won his first three matches, including a first period fall and a 17-1 tech fall over Messiah's Zach Needles. In the semifinals, he narrowly was defeated by the top seed but bounced back in the consolations with back-to-back victories for a third-place finish.
Updale put on a great performance in his Racich Rumble debut finishing 4-1 overall. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Updale won his first two matches via decision. In the semifinals after dropping a match to the top seed, he advanced to the consolation finals and took third via a medical forfeit. Senior
Gavin Range went 2-2 at 285lbs, he won his first match via a pinfall in just under two minutes over Cortland's Tim Mcgrath. Range ended his afternoon with a victory by a 10-1 major decision.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday for their opening dual-meet of the season against New Jersey City University starting at 1pm.
