Six Men's Wrestlers Reach Second Day of Region III Championships

EWING, N.J. – Four Ursinus men's wrestlers reached the championship semifinal round, while two remain alive in wrestle backs at the NCAA Region III Championships on Friday.

The Bears totaled 80.5 points and sit in third place in the team standings. No. 3 and host The College of New Jersey leads the field with 97.5 points, followed by Messiah (93.5). No. 11 New York University (79.5) is fourth, while Gettysburg (68.5) rounds out the top five of the 21-team field.

Juniors Andrew Schaen (141), Braden Kmak (157), Mohamed Abdelatty (285) and senior Anthony Cerulli (174) led the Bears' lineup by advancing to the championship semifinals. Seniors Michael Adams (125) and Derek Giordano (165) remain alive in the consolation bracket. To qualify for the NCAA Championships, wrestlers must finish in the top three of their respective weight classes.

The fifth seed at 141 pounds, Schaen recorded a 9-2 decision over Elizabethtown's Owen Heffner to advance to the quarterfinals. He then avenged his loss at the Centennial Conference Championships to Gettysburg's Brendan Callahan with a 10-2 decision to reach the semifinals. Schaen tallied two takedowns in the opening period and added a third in the second period en route to the victory. He will face TCNJ's top-seeded and fifth-ranked Vincent Santaniello in Saturday morning's semifinal.

At 157 pounds, Kmak collected two falls to reach the semifinals. The No. 3 seed pinned Elizabethtown's Michael Beers at the 2:05 mark of the first period before pinning TCNJ's Colin Menier at the 6:30 mark. He will face Gettysburg's Gavin Pascoe for a spot in the NCAA Championships. Kmak and Pascoe have split their two meetings this season, with Kmak earning a 13-7 dual-meet victory and Pascoe posting a 7-0 decision at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Cerulli, the fourth seed at 174 pounds, won all three of his matches by bonus points to reach the semifinals. He opened with a fall over McDaniel's Alex Taylor — his 25th of the season, which ranks third in Division III. Cerulli followed with a 13-3 major decision over Eastern's Darrale Barrett and an 8-0 major decision over fifth-seeded Anthony Matas of Misericordia. He will meet TCNJ's top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Hunter Mays in the semifinals.

The Bears' final semifinalist came at 285 pounds, where second-seeded and 11th-ranked Abdelatty recorded two falls. He pinned Delaware Valley's Nathanael Obrzut at the 2:27 mark before securing a fall over Alvernia's Owen Reber at 3:39 to advance.

At 125 pounds, Adams moved into the consolation quarterfinals with a 2-1 record. He opened with an 18-1 technical fall over Arcadia's Hobe Givens before falling to TCNJ's third-seeded Matt Griffin by a 7-0 decision in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Adams pinned Marymount's Ian Morales at the 4:34 mark after overcoming a 2-0 deficit and reversing Morales to his back for the fall.

Giordano dropped his opening match at 165 pounds but responded with three straight consolation victories to reach the placement rounds. He pinned Arcadia's Riley Gutierrez at the 4:38 mark and McDaniel's Austen Kuntz at 1:04 to advance to the blood round. Against Scranton's Donnell Young, Giordano erased an early 2-0 deficit with takedowns in the first and second periods en route to a 9-5 decision. He will face New York University's Nick Bell on Saturday.

Sophomore Blaise Verdino (133), junior Sean Cowan (197), and junior Benjamin Sanders (184) each reached the blood round but fell one win shy of placing in the top eight of their respective weight classes.

Ursinus returns to action Saturday morning at 10 a.m. inside the TCNJ Rec Center with NCAA Championship berths on the line.
