Baseball Sweeps Pitt-Greensburg to Start Spring Break Trip

MYRTLE BEACH, SC. - Ursinus College junior Solomon Griffith went 5-7 with five RBIs as the Bears swept Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday afternoon. Winning the opener by a 14-0 score and 5-1 in game two. The bats were on fire for Ursinus as they combined for 26 total hits on the day and only allowed one run between both games.

Game One: Ursinus 14 Pitt-Greensburg 0 

In game one, Joey Mullen took the mound for the Bears and turned in a gem, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out seven. Mullen allowed just one hit in the top of the first before escaping trouble when Pitt-Greensburg's Devin Renzi popped out to second. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bears hung up a four spot on the scoreboard. Jakob Cantor led off with a single to center and stole second shortly after. Cantor advanced to third on a flyout to center field. Griffth had an outstanding day at the plate and scored Cantor with a base hit to center. Tom Snipes followed up with a single to right and both runners advanced 90 feet after a groundout to the pitcher. Matteo Falcone made it 3-0 with a double to left field and scored after Nick Diaz double to left center.  

The Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the third to stretch their lead to 8-0. Griffith led off with a single to center and later stole second and third. Falcone brought him home with a double to left field and Max Gadsden blasted a three-run homerun scoring both Diaz and Falcone. In the fifth, the Bears had five straight hits including extra base hits from Keegan Stem, Griffith, and Andrew Richter. Ursinus would add six runs in the inning and stretch their lead to 14-0. Senior Luke Verga and freshman Mike Scheller would only allow one hit over the final two frames to give Ursinus their third consecutive victory.   

Game Two: Ursinus 5 Pitt Greensburg 1

Senior Alex Crocamo started on the bump for Ursinus and went 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out four Bobcats. Keegan Stem led the Bears at the plate, going 3-3 while scoring two runs and driving in another. The Bears tagged Pitt-Greensburg's starter Michael Sullivan for two early runs in the top half of the first inning. Jakob Cantor led off the ball game with a free pass and advanced to second after Stem singled to left field. Griffith reached base via a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. After a fielder's choice and a strikeout, Matteo Falcone came through with a two out two RBI single to put the Bears ahead.  

The Bobcats answered with a run in the second inning after a double scored Jace Cappellini. The Bears would add insurance runs in the third and fourth inning and held a 4-1 advantage. Stem led off the third with a double and later scored after Griffith singled to center. In the fourth, Dylan Runsdorf led off with a double to left field and advanced to third via a groundout. Runsdorf crossed the plate after Cantor reached first via an error with two outs. Ursinus added another run in the fifth after Stem doubled to right center scoring Cantor. T.J. Snyder closed the door earning the save after recording the final four outs of the game.  

Freshman Keegan Stem had an impressive afternoon going 4-6 with 2 RBIs while senior Matteo Falcone went 3-6 with 5 RBIs between both games.  

Urisnus will return to action on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach when they will play Delaware Valley at 9am.
