ELMIRA, N.Y. – Behind winning eight of the ten bouts, the Ursinus College men's wrestling team defeated Elmira College on Sunday afternoon, 47-9.
With the victory, Ursinus improves to 2-0 in dual meet this season meanwhile the Eagles fall to 0-7 overall. "The boys took care of business today and did what they were supposed to do," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "We have a few things to work on but overall, it was a good day. We have a well-earned break coming up and then we'll gear up for the Citrus Invitational in Florida."
The dual started at 149lbs and Ursinus jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage behind a 15-0 technical fall from first-year
Braden Kmak. After an early takedown at the 1:32-mark, Kmak increased his lead to 7-0 behind a near-side cradle attempt. With the second period starting in neutral, Kmak extended his lead to double-digits with his second takedown and later earned the victory by technical fall.
Elmira bounced back during the 157lb bout, as first-year
Nicolas Rehfuss fell by pinfall to Elmira's Hollis Berry at the 4:26-mark of the second period. During the 165lb bout, the Bears responded as sophomore
Derek Giordano collected a pinfall just 36 seconds into the match to give Ursinus a 11-6 match lead. Giordano used a "fireman's carry" before adjusting to a headlock position to record the pinfall in his season debut.
Giordano's victory sparked the Bears' lineup as Ursinus added three consecutive pinfalls at 174lbs, 184lbs, and 197lbs to increase their match lead to 29-6. First-year
Sean Cowan (174lbs) pinned Elmira's Bryan Stafford at the 2:35-mark, before classmate Max Borton recorded a fall at the 1:22-mark over Caleb Tuttle. Cowan's victory marked his fifth victory of the season via fall and improves his season record to 13-5. For Borton, he improves to 12-3 on the season with the victory and marks his eighth victory of the season via bonus points.
Senior
Connor Fritsch continued the rally with the four consecutive first period fall with a pin over Elmira's Kahajen Smith at the 1:14-mark. At 285lbs, first-year
Mohamed Abdelatty fell via a 9-4 decision to Elmira's Darius Green to make the match score 29-9.
The Bears ended the meet with three consecutive victories via forfeits at 125lbs, 133lbs, and 141lbs. First-year
Andrew Perez (125lbs), senior
Jagger Clapsadle (133lbs), and sophomore
Andrew Minko (141lbs) each received forfeits for the Bears at their respective weight classes to give Ursinus the 47-9 match victory.
The Bears will return to action on Friday, December 29
th as they travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the Citrus Invitational.
