Men's Wrestling Wins Centennial Conference Championship

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For the first time since 2014, the Ursinus College men's wrestling team recorded their league leading 12th Centennial Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears put four wrestlers into the championship finals while nine of ten wrestlers collected top-four finishes. Ursinus received a total of 84 team points, with McDaniel finishing in second with 73.5 points, and Merchant Marine rounding out the top-three with 64.5 points. Muhlenberg (55) collected a fourth-place finish, with Gettysburg (47.5) finishing fifth, and Johns Hopkins rounding out the six-team field with 27.5 team points.

"The boys looked great today," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "The coaching staff has been saying all year that it was going to take every single guy in the room to get this done and that rang true today. Every single year since I've started coaching here at Ursinus, we've had four finalist with one champion, but we were never close to winning this tournament. This year we had four finalist with one champion again, but this year we had five other guys wrestling for third and came up with some big bonus points in those matches to seal the deal. I couldn't be more proud of this team. We've faced a ton of adversity and just continue to push forward."

Senior Romeo Rodriguez was the Bears' lone champion at 141lbs, while seniors Terry Adams (125lbs), Shawn Marchesano (165lbs), and Jake Ahmad (285lbs) each collected second-place honors.

In the consolations, Ursinus bounced back winning four of of their five matches as senior Gary Nagle (184lbs), juniors Jagger Clapsadle (133lbs) and Dante Monaco (149lbs), and first-year Anthony Cerulli (174lbs) collected third-place finishes. In the finals, Rodriguez met a familiar face in Merchant Marine's Charles Lausten in which the duo matched up in a dual a month ago between the two teams with Rodriguez earning a 12-0 decision.

Lausten earned the first takedown of the match to jump out to a 2-0 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the first. Rodriguez quickly escaped and a slide by takedown from Lausten in the remaining seconds gave him a 4-1 lead after the first period. Rodriguez choose bottom and quickly escaped, but another Mariners takedown increased his deficit to three heading into the final period. With Lausten leading 6-3, Rodriguez bounced back with a takedown and an escape made the deficit two with under forty seconds remaining. With under a minute remaining, Rodriguez scored a takedown with a quick double leg before cutting his opponent to keep the deficit at two. Rodriguez used a sweep single for his second takedown to tie the match at seven a piece heading into sudden victory.

Rodriguez choose bottom and quickly escaped and was able to hold off the Mariners attack for his first Centennial Conference Championship.
