GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's wrestling team rounded out their regular season schedule with six wrestlers placing at the Messiah Open on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Gavin Range recorded the highest finish with a fourth-place finish in the 285lb bracket, while sophomore
Franco Mazza (125lbs) and first-year
Michael Adams (133lbs) each earned fifth-place finishes. First-year
Nils Updale (184lbs) had an impressive afternoon reaching the semifinals while collecting a sixth-place finish, and junior
Will Schwartz (125lbs) added a seventh-place finish while sophomore Alex Tenaglia (133lbs) finished in eighth.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Range dropped his opening match to the eventual champion University of Penn's Matthew Cruise via a fall at the 6:46-mark. He bounced back in the consolation bracket winning three-straight matches to reach the third-place match. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native collected a fall over Gettysburg's Maximillion Ferguson (2:05), an 8-1 decision over Nassau CC's Patrick Ancewicz, and a 4-1 decision over Franklin & Marshall's Chase Thompson. In the consolation finals, Range lost via a third period fall to Millersville's Jordan Espinosa.
Mazza recorded a victory by a 6-3 decision over Messiah's Caiden Heller in the fifth-place match, while first-year
Michael Adams finished with a 4-2 record in the 133lb bracket. Adams dropped his opening match but bounced back with three consecutive victories to advance to the consolation semifinals. He collected a pinfall over UMBC's Henry Sonti at the 3:58-mark, a 3-1 decision over Seton Hill University's Mark Paradine, and a fall over teammate Alex Tenaglia in the second period. Adams fell via decision in his next match but responded with a 10-0 major decision over Millersville's Colin Higgins for the fifth-place finish.
At 184lbs, Updale opened with back-to-back victories to advance to the championship semifinals. He defeated Gettysburg's Russell Canova via a 4-1 decision and advanced to the semifinals after American International's Russell Canova injury defaulted in the next match. After falling by a 3-2 decision to the Naval Academy's Jonathan Sanchez, Updale fell to Pittsburg Johnstown's Will Small via a 3-2 decision for the sixth-place finish.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, February 11
th as they host the Centennial Conference Championships from Helfferich Hall.
