COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore
Max Parnis won the 149lb weight class leading the Ursinus College men's wrestling team to a ninth-place finish, while hosting their annual Racich Rumble on Saturday afternoon from the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.
New York University won the team title behind 158.5 team points, while Washington & Lee ranked second totaling 128.5 points with Messiah University (119) rounding out the top-three teams. Ursinus totaled 66 team points behind Parnis winning the 149lb bracket and junior
Anthony Cerulli placing fourth at 174lbs.
Parnis opened with back-to-back falls including a first-period pin over Camden County's Andrew Jamieson, and his second pin over WPI's Lucas Marchese advanced him into the quarterfinals. Parnis faced an 8-5 deficit midway through the second period but earned a pinfall to reach the semifinal bout. He would go on to take out the top-seed, Trinity College's Christopher Perry (Ranked Sixth in Region I) via a 9-6 decision, while a 17-0 technical fall over Messiah's Levi Snyder gave Parnis the 149lb title.
Cerulli opened with a 49-second fall over Steven's Chris Piazza before adding a 14-0 major decision over Johns Hopkins' Chris Powell. In the quarterfinals, Cerulli added another first-period pinfall, before falling in the semi's to WPI's Joe Tully. In the third-place bout, Cerulli fell by a 5-3 decision to New York Unviersity's Nick Bell.
Sophomore
Andrew Schaen (141lbs),
Samuel Teti (141lbs),
Mohamed Abdelatty (285lbs), and senior
Franco Mazza (125lbs) each recorded multiple victories on the day. Schaen opened with a 20-5 technical fall before advancing on a medical forfeit after leading 7-2 versus Cortland's Kenny Leverich. Unfortunately, he dropped his next two matches to finish with a 2-2 record. Teti dropped his opening bout but responded with three consecutive victories including a 13-second and a second period fall to close out his tournament with a 3-2 mark.
Mazza tallied a 6-4 decision over Washington & Lee's Ben Rubin to open his day, and after advancing to the quarterfinals, he dropped a 6-3 decision versus the sixth seed WPI's Tanner Thatcher. After a victory in the consolations, he would be upended by Rubin via a 9-6 decision in the consolation quarterfinals.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, November 16th as they host New England College for a dual-meet starting at 1:30 p.m.
