COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's wrestling team closed out their 2023-24 dual meet season with a 39-12 defeat against No. 14 Alvernia University on
Saturday evening from Helfferich Hall.
With the defeat, Ursinus closes out the season with a 10-3 overall record while the Golden Wolves improved to 21-3 on the season.
The Golden Wolves won eight of the ten bouts with all ten matches resulting in bonus points for both teams. Alvernia's Keito Shaw opened the dual with a 17-2 technical fall over first-year
Andrew Perez to give the Golden Wolves a 5-0 advantage. After an 11-3 major deicsion at 133lbs, Alvernia's Avery Leonard recorded an 18-1 technical fall over sophomore
Jacob Sheiner at 141lbs to extend the deficit to 14-0.
The Golden Wolves followed up with a trio technical falls at 149lbs, 157lbs, and 165lbs to extend their lead to 29-0 through six matches. At 149lbs, Alvernia's Quinn Tobin collected a 15-0 tech fall over first-year
Braden Kmak while regionally ranked Jason Rezac (Alvernia – Ranked 4
th in the Southeast) tallied a 16-1 tech fall over first-year
Max Parnis at 157lbs. In the 165lb bout, returning national champion and currently ranked No. 1 in the country Matthew Lackman earned a 16-1 technical fall over senior
Shawn Marchesano.
The Bears earned their first victory in the 174lb match as sophomore
Anthony Cerulli earned a first-period pinfall over Avernia's Ryan LePore to bring the match score to 29-6. After a scramble in the opening period, Cerulli locked up a near sided cradle to record the pinfall at the 1:04-mark of the opening period.
Alvernia recorded a major decision at 184lbs as James Circle defeated first-year
Jake Gross via a 12-3 score, while a forfeit at 197lbs by the Bears brought the match score to 39-6. In the final bout, senior
Jake Ahmad tallied a second period fall over Alvernia's Aidan Homan to close out the dual with a 39-12 score.
The Bears return to action on Sunday, February 25
th as they travel to the Mideast Futures tournament hosted by The College of New Jersey. On March 1st, Ursinus will be back in action for the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships as ten wrestlers will look to punch their ticket to the National Championships.
