COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -The Ursinus College men's wrestling team opened their 2025 calendar season with a 2-2 record while hosting their annual Manganaro Duals on Saturday from the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.
The Bears dropped their first two bouts against Rhode Island College (27-22) and No. 8 United States Coast Guard Academy (34-9), before bouncing back with victories over Trinity College (36-6) and American International College (39-7). Ursinus currently sits with a 4-6 overall dual record and will kick off their Centennial schedule on Friday, January 24th against Johns Hopkins.
Sophomore
Andrew Schaen paced the Bears lineup finishing with a perfect 4-0 record at 141lbs, while classmate
Max Parnis (149lbs), senior
Dante Monaco (157lbs), and junior
Anthony Cerulli (174lbs) each finished with 3-1 records.
"Overall, I thought we wrestled well today and competed hard, but we need to do better in our first duals of the day," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "We came out flat and let one slip away from us for second consecutive competition but battled back and wrestled well against some really tough competition. Thankfully, this is a correctable and I'm confident as we get into the dual meet portion of the season that we'll be able to correct it."
Rhode Island College 27, Ursinus 22
The Anchormen jumped out to an early 12-0 lead as they recorded victories by fall at 125lbs and 133lbs. The Bears responded with three consecutive victories at 141lbs, 149lbs, and 157lbs to regain a 13-12 match lead with five bouts remaining. Schaen opened with an 11-0 major decision over Rhode Island's Hunter Lundberg, while Parnis added a third-period fall, and Monaco earned a 5-2 decision to give Ursinus the lead. Rhode Island bounced back with a technical fall at 165lbs and a fall at 174lbs and regained a 24-12 match lead. Junior
Nils Updale collected a 9-3 decision at 184lbs, while first-year
Samuel Rock III tallied a forfeit at 285lbs resulting a 27-22 defeat for the Bears.
No. 8 USCGA 34, Ursinus 9
Coast Guard jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind a victory by decision at 125lbs and a technical fall at 133lbs. Schaen responded for the Bears by earning a 5-4 decision over Dom Moyer at 141lbs to cut into the deficit and make the match score 8-3. At 149lbs, nationally ranked eighth USCGA's Nathan Fitt earned a technical fall, while major decisions at 157lbs and 165lbs increased the visitors match lead to 21-3. The Bears responded with a pin at 174lbs as Cerulli faced an early 8-3 deficit, but turned a reversal into a fall at the 4:00-mark to make the score 21-10. Unfortunately, USCGA won each of the final three bouts enroute to a 34-9 decision.
Ursinus 36, Trinity College 6
The Bears used eight consecutive victories from 141lbs through 285lbs enroute to a decisive 36-6 decision over Trinity College. After back-to-back decisions for Trinity at 125lbs and 133lbs, Schaen put the Bears on the board with a 9-4 decision over Daniel Scheverria at 141lbs to make the match score 6-3. At 149lbs, Parnis recorded a 16-0 technical fall to give Ursinus an 8-6 lead while an 8-1 decision from Monaco extended the Bears advantage to five. Sophomore
Braden Kmak earned a first period fall over John Lagan at 165lbs, while Cerulli collected the quickest fall of the day for Ursinus with a 26-second pin at 174lbs to stretch the Bears lead to 23-6. Ursinus closed out the meet with three consecutive bonus point victories as Updale earned a technical fall, while senior
Connor Fritsch and Rock III collected major decisions enroute to a 36-6 victory for Ursinus.
Ursinus 39, American International 7
Ursinus carried the momentum into their final dual as they earned eight victories with seven of them coming via bonus points to collect a 39-7 victory over American International. Senior
Franco Mazza (125ls), Monaco (157lbs), Fritsch (197lbs), and sophomore
Mohamed Abdelatty (285lbs) each recorded victories by forfeit. Schaen (141lbs) added his second major decision of the day with a 14-1 victory over Aaron Morocho, while Parnis tallied a 9-6 sudden victory over Cqari Bacote at 149lbs to put Ursinus ahead 13-4. Kmak and Cerulli also each added victories by major decisions to give Ursinus the victory and finish the tournament with a 2-2 record.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, January 18th as they host the Will Abele Invitational from the Floy Lewis Bakes Fieldhouse at 10 a.m.
