Michael Adams and junior
Andrew Schaen won individual titles to lead the Ursinus men's wrestling team in its season debut at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday.
Ursinus had five wrestlers finish within the top six of their respective weight classes. Adams was the top seed in the 125-pound bracket, while Schaen was seeded second to open the tournament. Senior
Anthony Cerulli made the finals in the 174-pound bracket but finished second, while senior
Nils Updale (184) placed fourth and junior
Braden Kmak (157) took sixth.
"The boys wrestled really well today," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "This was easily the toughest Messiah Invitational that we've been to and the first time we had two champs in my time here. Obviously, there are some things we need to work on, but everyone who competed today wrestled whistle to whistle with a lot of heart, and as coaches that's all we can really ask for."
Adams opened his tournament by recording consecutive falls, pinning Liberty's Jalen Fyffe in 44 seconds and McDaniel's Cody Johnson in 15 seconds to reach the semifinal round. He then tallied five points in the final period to defeat Brockport's Trevor Middendorf, 6-3. In the finals, Adams recorded a pair of takedowns and a three-point near fall to secure the 125-pound title with a 10-4 win over McDaniel's Romeo Tsai.
In the 141-pound bracket, Schaen went a perfect 5-0 en route to his individual title. He opened with a 10-1 major decision over Johns Hopkins' Max Apsel before defeating Arcadia's Braxton Stewart by fall at the 4:37 mark. Schaen followed with a 17-1 technical fall over Brockport's Tanner King and a 15-10 decision over Brockport's Jaden Friel to reach the finals. Against Messiah's Shaun Quirk, who is ranked No. 14 nationally, Schaen used a trio of takedowns and an escape in the final stanza to earn a 14-13 victory.
Cerulli continued to shine for the Bears by finishing with a 3-1 record and placing second at 174 pounds. He started with back-to-back victories by fall, pinning Brockport's Elijah Bonet in 56 seconds and Arcadia's Stanley Pete at the 2:32 mark of the first period. In his semifinal bout, Cerulli tallied a pair of takedowns en route to a 7-0 victory over Brockport's Gavin McLaughlin. Against 11th-ranked Zach Needles of Messiah, Cerulli fell by fall in the finals to take silver.
In the 184-pound bracket, Updale opened by earning a 20-3 technical fall over Johns Hopkins' Samuel Gledhill before defeating Liberty's Ronald Black, 9-3. After falling 4-1 in sudden victory, Updale bounced back by defeating Washington and Lee's Tucker Bellanca, 6-2, and Johns Hopkins' Rob Moretz, 9-6. He closed out his tournament by defeating Liberty's Paul Moore to reach the consolation finals but hit his match limit and settled for fourth place.
