Cerulli Wins Centennial Crown as Men's Wrestling Finishes Second

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Anthony Cerulli won the 174lb Centennial Conference title, leading the Ursinus College men's wrestling team to a second-place finish on Saturday at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Ursinus put five wrestlers into the finals as senior Franco Mazza (125), sophomores Andrew Schaen (141), Braden Kmak (165), and junior Nils Updale (184) each earned second-place finishes. In the consolation finals, junior Michael Adams (133), sophomores Max Parnis (149lbs), and Mohamed Abdelatty (285) tallied bronze medal finishes for the Bears.

Merchant Marine won the team title with a total of 82 points, while Ursinus finished second overall with a team tally of 80.5. Muhlenberg College (68) placed third, McDaniel College (55.5) took fourth, with Gettysburg College (54.5), and Johns Hopkins (12.5) rounding out the six teams competing.

"Overall, we wrestled really well today, but it wasn't enough," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "At a tournament like this you need to pick up bonus points whenever the opportunity presents itself, and Merchant Marine did a better job of that than we did today. They wrestled great; hats off to them. We are going to hit the rest button and get ready for the Futures tournament next weekend and regionals the following weekend. It's time to punch some tickets to Providence."

In the 174lb bracket, Cerulli finished with a perfect 3-0 record to collect his first Centennial crown. He opened with a second-period fall over Gettysburg's Kobe Moore at the 3:49-mark, before defeating the No. 2 seed Connor Powell of Johns Hopkins University to reach the championship. Cerulli avenged a previous loss against Powell from the team's dual meet contest in January. The Churchville, Pennsylvania native defended off a shot from Powell before advancing his position for the opening takedown. In the second period, Cerulli extended his lead to 7-0 behind as he connected on a cross face cradle enroute to the 10-0 major decision. In the finals, Cerulli earned a victory by medical forfeit over Muhlenberg's top-seeded Anson Dewar.

Mazza represented the Bears in the 125lb bracket and repeated with his second silver medal at the conference championships. Mazza advanced to the championships with a 9-2 decision over Gettysburg's Noah Hinkel, but fell in the rematch of last year's championship against Muhlenberg's Joey Lamparelli, 3-1 (TB-1). With the match tied at one entering the second overtime, Lamparelli chose bottom and earned an escape to take a 2-1 lead into the final 30 seconds. Next, Mazza chose neutral but was unable to connect on the match-winning takedown falling 2-1.

Next at 141lbs, Schaen tallied a second-place nod for the Bears behind a 1-1 record. He opened with a 5-1 decision over McDaniel's Joe McKneely, before falling by a 4-1 score in sudden victory against Muhlenberg's Andrew Loniewski. Each wrestler earned an escape over the first three periods and entered sudden victory tied at one. In overtime, Loniewski secured a single leg which resulted in a scramble leading to the winning takedown.

The Bears' next finalist came at 165lbs as Kmak collected a second-place finish in his Centennial Conference debut. Kmak, the No. 2 seed opened with a bye before advancing to the championship round with a first-period fall over Chris Roybal of Johns Hopkins. Kmak collected a takedown before connecting on a near sided cradle for the pin at the 2:06-mark of the first stanza. In the championship bout, Kmak fell by an 11-6 score against Gettysburg's Jusitn Richey to place second.

In the 184lb weight class, Updale made his second straight appearance in the conference finals and third top-four finish after placing second last season at 197lbs and fourth in his rookie season. The Doylestown, Pennsylvania native opened with a 4-1 decision over Muhlenberg's Ryan Fairchild to reach the finals. In the championship, Updale fell by fall against the top seed, Merchant Marine's Tyler Withers.

Making his Centennial Championship debut at 133lbs, Adams finished with a 4-1 record to place third. He opened with a 26-second fall over Gettysburg's Kyle Collins, before falling in the semifinals against Muhlenberg's CJ Horvath by a 5-1 score. Adams bounced back in the consolations with an 8-5 win in sudden victory over Duncan Stadler to reach the consolation championship. In the third-place bout, Adams recorded a first-period fall over McDaniel's Romeo Tsai to secure a podium spot. Against Tsai, Adams defended off an early shot attempt before using a wizard to throw Tsai to his back for the pin at the 1:04-mark.

Parnis secured the Bears' second bronze medal with a third-place finish in the 149lb bracket behind a 3-1 record. He opened with a 12-4 major decision over Merchant's Matthew Trinidad, but fell in the semifinals against top-seed and ranked 10th nationally McDaniel's Thomas Monn. Next, Parnis bounced back with a 7-1 decision over Muhlenberg's Alex Greco, before receiving a victory by medical forfeit against Johns Hopkins' Freddy Pimental in the third-place bout.

Next, Abdelatty closed out the tournament with a third-place nod in the 285lb bracket.
