EWING, Pa. – Behind three place-winners, the Ursinus College men's wrestling team earned a ninth-place finish at the Mideast Futures Tournament on Saturday from The College of New Jersey.
Junior
Derek Giordano (165lbs) paced the Bears with a fifth-place finish, while first-year
CJ English (285lbs) and sophomore
Evan Shriberg (141lbs) collected sixth-place nods. TCNJ won the tournament title with 109 team points with Stevens (92), and New York University rounding the top-three of the 12-team field.
Giordano opened with a loss against the second-place finisher but bounced back in the consolations with four straight victories to reach the fifth-place bout. He opened by defeating Elizabethtown's Aiden Robinson by a 57-second fall, before pinning Marymount's Ian Harris at the 1:52-mark. Next, Giordano added a 51-second fall over Jacob Speed of Elizabethtown and reached the fifth-place match with his fourth first-period fall against Gettysburg's Connor Hoefling. In his final match, Giordano pinned Josh Howard of Pennsylvania College of Technology to finish fifth overall at 165lbs.
In the 285lb weight class, English opened with a loss against Marymount's Edgar Lagos but responded with a 9-8 sudden victory over Marymount's Edgar Ibarra to advance into the consolation semifinals. In sudden victory, English allowed a takedown, before using a reversal and two nearfall points to secure the one-point victory. Next, English recorded a 9-3 victory over Millersville's Kurt Scheurman to reach the fifth-place bout. Unfortunately, English fell by a 16-5 major decision in his final bout to finish sixth with a 2-2 record.
Shriberg shined at 141lbs earning a sixth-place finish behind a 6-2 record. He dropped his opening bout against Stevens' Joseph Bodnar, but bounced back with a first-period fall over Penn's Bryan Tilney and a 23-6 technical fall against teammate Matthew Copeland. In the consolation round of eight, Shriberg defeated teammate
Samuel Teti by a 13-4 score, before pinning Muhlenberg's Joe Lenio to reach the fifth-place match. In his final match, Shriberg fell by a 12-6 decision against McDaniel's Ethyn Ramey to finish sixth.

Aiden Leypoldt (133lbs) each earned atleast two victories for the Bears in their respective weight classes.
The Bears return to action on Friday, February 28th as they compete at the NCAA Mideast Regionals for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 14th.
