Six Men's Wrestlers Attain Scholar All-American Honors

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Six Ursinus College men's wrestlers were honored on the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NCAA Scholar All-Americans list announced by the organization.  
 
 
Senior Franco Mazza, juniors Michael Adams, Anthony Cerulli, and Nils Updale, and sophomores Andrew Schaen and Braden Kmak each received the prestigious honor for the Bears.
 
 
To become an NWCA Scholar All-American, there are a series of athletic and academic criteria for qualification. First the wrestler must place top-eight in the regional tournament or wrestle at least 15 matches during the season with a winning percentage greater than 66%. Secondly, a wrestler must have an average GPA of 3.2 over the last two semesters or last three trimesters or have a cumulative GPA of 3.2.
 

Mazza, an Economics major, holds a 3.46 GPA and closed out his final season in Collegeville with a 27-17 record. This season, Mazza earned his second silver medal at the Centennial Conference Championships and placed sixth at the NCAA Region III Championships. This marks the third time Mazza received Academic All-American honor from the NCWA.

 
Cerulli holds a 3.31 cumulative GPA as a Finance major and posted a 33-13 record at 174lbs this season. The Churchville, Pennsylvania native won his first ever Centennial Conference Championship this season and finished fourth at the Region III Championships. Cerulli continued to be a dominant force on the mat as he led the team in victories with a 33-13 record, while earning a team-high 20 falls. Last year, Cerulli led the team with 17 falls, with 16 of them coming in the first period.
 

Updale became the Bears starter this season at 184lbs, after earning a silver medal at the Centennial Championships last year at 197 pounds. He holds a 3.42 cumulative GPA as a Health and Exercise Physiology major. The Doylestown, Pennsylvania native held a 19-8 record this year, placing second at the CC Championships and placing fifth at the Region III Championships.
 

Schaen had a breakout sophomore season for Ursinus at 141lbs, posting a 28-13 record, and placing second at the CC Championships. The Harbeson, Delaware native holds a 3.24 GPA as a Health and Exercise Physiology major.
 

Kmak, an Economics major, holds a 3.52 cumulative GPA and enjoyed a breakout season at 165 pounds, earning a 21-15 record. He ranked second on the team with 16 falls, placed second at the CC Championships, and finished seventh at the Region III Championships.
 

Adams earned a 21-17 record this season as the Bears' starter at 133-pounds. He currently holds a 3.1 cumulative GPA as a Finance major. This season, Adams recorded a third-place nod at Centennials and placed eighth at the Region III Championships.
 

The NWCA is proud to honor these outstanding individuals who demonstrate excellence on the mat and in the classroom as well," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer.
 

Ursinus closed out the season, finishing second at the CC Championships and placing 10th as a team at the NCAA Region III Championships.
