SWARTHMORE, Pa. –
Homestanding Swarthmore had 15 hits on the day as the Garnet
defeated Ursinus 14-3 in the opening game of a two-game series on
Wednesday afternoon.
Right
fielder Jimmy Gill had three hits for Swarthmore, who scored in
seven of eight innings.
Trailing
1-0 after the first, the Bears did tie the score in the top of the
second as sophomore center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown,
Pa./Pottsgrove) scored on an error.
Ursinus
scored one more time in the fifth and eighth, as sophomore first
baseman Rick Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored on a
fielder's choice by sophomore second baseman Lou Argentine
(Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley).
In the
eighth, Gresh drove in a run as he doubled down the line scoring
junior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall
Prep).
Gresh,
senior right fielder Bret Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen)
and senior catcher Chris Fusco (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) reach
recorded two hits on the day.
On the
mound, freshman pitcher Ryan Furlong (Douglaston, N.Y./Xavier) took
the loss falling to 2-3. He gave up two earned runs in 1.2 innings
of work.
Ursinus and Swarthmore
are scheduled to finish the series on Friday afternoon in
Collegeville.
