CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team earned a
split against Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, the host Red Devils scored a run in the
bottom of the eighth in a 5-4 win, while the Bears (10-12, 1-7
Centennial) defeated the Red Devils (6-14, 3-5 Centennial) 6-2.
In the opener, Ursinus trailed 3-0 going into the sixth before
tying the score in the top half of the frame as senior outfielder
Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon)
drove home sophomore shortstop Brandon Sullivan
(Glibertsville, Pa./Boyertown) on a fielders choice for
the first run of the game for the Bears. Senior right fielder
Bret Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen)
scored on an error to bring the Bears within one, before Clarke
scored on a RBI single by sophomore first baseman Rich
Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford).
Ursinus took the lead in the top of the seventh as sophomore
second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet
Valley) scored on a wild pitch. Argentine led off the
inning with a double, then stole third. The Red Devils tied in the
bottom of the seventh, then scored a run in the eighth with two
outs to win the game.
Freshman pitcher A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock
South) took the loss, as he gave up the unearned run in
the bottom of the eighth. Senior pitcher Corey Weaver (West
Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) pitched seven innings, striking out
six and walking four.
Junior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton
Hall Prep) was 2-for-3 in the opener.
In game two, Ursinus scored two runs in the top of the third as
Clarke drove home Sullivan and Vogt on a two-out double.
Senior designated hitter Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville,
Pa./Boyertown) scored a run in the fourth on an error to
give the Bears a 3-0 lead. Clarke would score a run of his own in
the fifth, as he led off the inning with a double, then scored on a
sacrifice fly by Schwager.
The Bears went up 6-0 in the sixth as Argentine scored on a RBI
double by Umstead. Umstead later scored on a sacrifice fly by Vogt.
Sophomore pitcher Steve Christakos (Rockville,
Md./Walter Johnson) got the win, improving to 2-2. He
fanned two and walked six in seven innings of work. Wright pitched
the eighth and freshman pitcher Jake Kohler (Maple Glen,
Pa./Upper Dublin) pitched the nine in relief. Both allowed
just one hit.
Sullivan finished game two 2-for-4, as did Clarke. Clarke had
two RBI and two runs scored in the win.
Ursinus hosts Muhlenberg on Tuesday.
