ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Trailing 3-1 heading into the fifth, the
Ursinus College baseball team scored five runs in the fifth and
never looked back in a 15-3 win over Muhlenberg Friday afternoon at
windy Cedar Creek Field.
The Bears (12-12-1, 3-7 Centennial) swept the season series from
the Mules (11-13, 5-5 Centennial) and are now unbeaten in their
last four.
Sophomore first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville,
Pa/Spring-Ford) had two home runs on the day, including a grand
slam in the sixth. He finished with seven RBI, as he added in a
three-run bomb in the ninth.
Ursinus got on the board in the third as junior third baseman
Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hill Prep) singled through the
right side, scoring sophomore shortstop Brandon Sullivan
(Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown).
The Bears broke the game open in the fifth, as Vogt had a
two-run single to right center scoring Sullivan and sophomore
second baseman Lou Argentine (). Senior right fielder Bret Umstead
(Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) would later score in the inning
on a RBI groundout by senior left fielder Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse
Station, N.J./Hunterdon).
The final run came across on a error that allowed senior
designated hitter Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) to
score.
The Bears added two runs in the ninth as Umstead hit a home run
to deep left center field, then saw Vogt score on a RBI single by
sophomore center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove).
Guthridge then hit a three-run home run with two outs.
That would be all senior pitcher Corey Weaver (West Grove,
Pa./Avon Grove) would need. Weaver went the full nine, striking out
six and allowing just two earned runs.
Guthridge, Umstead, Vogt and senior catcher Chris Fusco
(Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) finished with three hits, while
Clarke, Schwager and Gresh all had two hits in the win.
Ursinus hosts Washington in a Centennial Conference doubleheader
starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
