Softball goes 1-1 against Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team began a six-game week by splitting a non-conference affair with Elizabethtown on Monday afternoon.

In the opener, Elizabethtown scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth in  a 3-1 win, while Ursinus (7-8) turned the tables in game two in a 6-0 win over the Blue Jays (8-9).

Ursinus' lone run in the first game came in the sixth as senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) doubled home senior designated player Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Shawnee) with two outs.

Of the six hits collected by the Bears, junior catcher Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had two of them.

Freshman Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) took the loss as she struck out five and walked three.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) scattered just three hits, walked three and struck out four in a complete game shutout to improve to 5-3.

All six runs came in the fourth inning as the Elizabethtown defense committed three errors. After sophomore shortstop Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and junior third baseman Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) got on base on back-to-back errors, while Jerdan scored on the second error. Junior second baseman Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and junior first baseman Kate Kehoe (Mariposa, Calif./Mariposa County) scored on a two-run single by sophomore right fielder Sam Lowes (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan). Lowes later scored on a single by sophomore center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley). After sophomore left fielder Taylor Zelitsky (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) scored on a passed ball, Gentile scored on a fielders choice by sophomore catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century).

Gentile, Vietheer and McFarland each had two hits in the second game win.

Ursinus will host F&M on Tuesday.
