Softball splits with McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – It was a tale of two pitching matchups in Sunday's Centennial Conference doubleheader between Ursinus and McDaniel.

In the first game, the Bears took the spotlight as sophomore pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) took a no-hitter into the seventh before settling for a  two-hitter in a 7-0 win, while in game two the Green Terror limited Ursinus to just one hit in a 3-0 win for McDaniel (9-19, 4-10 Centennial) over the Bears (15-11, 8-3 Centennial).

In the opener, the Bears busted out the bats for 11 hits including home runs by sophomore first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) and junior second baseman Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood). Ursinus took a 1-0 lead after the first on a RBI single by senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square). The Bears added four more in the fifth as Pfrommer hit a two-run home run scoring sophomore center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley), while two runs later scored on a throwing error. Senior designated player Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and sophomore shortstop Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored on the throwing error. Brown's two run home run in the seventh scored Jerdan for the final two runs of the game.

The no-hit bid was broken up as Green Terror first baseman Erinne Warrenfeltz blooped one into right field just inside the line.

Weber finished with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Pfrommer, Gallagher, Miles and Brown each finished with two hits.

In game two, Miles broke up the no-hit bid with a double with one out in the seventh to right field. Freshman pinch runner Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) would later score on a groundout by junior catcher Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage).

Freshman pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) took the loss, as she gave up three earned runs in 4.2 innings. She struck out three and walked three.

Ursinus will travel to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, weather permitting.
