Baseball swept by Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ursinus College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to defending conference champion Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon, as the Bears fell in game one 14-5 and dropped the night cap, 7-3.

In the first game, Ursinus (9-17, 5-9 Centennial) had a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth before Hopkins erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the inning and added three more in the sixth to take the win. In game two, Hopkins went out to a 7-0 lead through seven, before Ursinus put three on the board in the eighth.

In the opener, Ursinus took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second as after designated hitter Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) walked with one out, junior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) singled to put two on with one out. Senior left fielder Danny Ludwig (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) singled home Schnell for the first run, while sophomore catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) doubled home Guthridge for the second run of the inning. Ludwig would later score on a RBI groundout by junior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley).

The next two runs came via a home run to left field by senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Baskin Ridge, N.J./The Hill School) that scored junior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse) for a 5-1 Bears lead.

The Blue Jays got all nine runs in the fourth via eight hits in the inning and a wild pitch. They would tack on three more runs in the sixth.

For Ursinus, Ludwig was 3-for-4 in game one, while Guthridge and Smith collected two hits each. Junior pitcher Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) took the loss, allowing 11 earned runs in four innings and walking four.

In game two, Ursinus had just three hits through seven innings, before scoring three runs in the eighth. After junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) doubled with one out, Vogt singled him home with two outs for the first run, then Vogt scored on a two-run home run by junior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) to right.

Sullivan finished game two 3-for-4 with a run scored. On the mound, sophomore A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) took the loss, as he gave up four earned runs in three innings of work.
