Softball sweeps Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Ursinus moved into sole possession of first place in the Centennial Conference standings on Thursday with a  two game sweep of Haverford. The Bears defeated the Fords 5-2 in game one, with the Bears (17-3, 10-3 Centennial) defeating the Fords (7-23, 3-11 Centennial) 8-0 in five innings in game two.

With the win, Ursinus moves a half-game ahead of Dickinson and two in front of Muhlenberg with the Bears having a suspended game with F&M to finish Friday, and a two-game series with Muhlenberg on Saturday.

In the first game, Ursinus trailed 2-1 after three before scoring a run in the fifth to tie and then three in the sixth to take the win. The Bears pounded out 14 hits in the first game.

Ursinus took a 1-0 lead in the first as sophomore catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) singled home sophomore first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) with two outs. Ursinus tied the score in the fifth as senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square) singled home sophomore center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) for a 2-all tie.

The Bears broke the game open in the sixth as Gentile hit a two-run single with two outs that scored freshman Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and sophomore Caitlin Higgins (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) who were both pinch runners. McFarland had scored earlier in the inning on a double by junior shortstop Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood).

McFarland finished game one 4-for-4, while Brown and Pfrommer were 2-for-3 each.

Sophomore pitcher Jennliyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) got the win, improving to 11-5 as she struck out nine and walked one.

In game two, Ursinus got all it needed in the first as the Bears batted around scoring four runs. The big hit was a two-run double by sophomore first baseman Kate Kehoe (Mariposa, Calif./Mariposa County). From there, Pfrommer had a home run in the fourth and Gentile had a two-run double in the fifth. Gentile. Pfrommer and junior second baseman Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) had two hits in game two.

Whelan won game two with a five-hit, seven strikeout performance in five innings.

Ursinus will resume the suspended game with the Diplomats Friday at 5 p.m., as the game will resume in the bottom of the fourth with the Bears trailing 8-6.
