Baseball sweeps Dickinson

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – With a clear Saturday finally in sight, the Ursinus College baseball took a pair of games from Dickinson by a 6-5 score in game one, with a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap to take an 8-7 decision in game two.

With the wins, Ursinus improved to 4-5 in Centennial play with five Centennial games coming up next week.

In game one, junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Junior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse) was 2-for-3 with three RBI as the Bears scored two in the third and three in the fourth in the win.

Trailing 5-1 after the top of the third, Ursinus got two back in the bottom of the frame and Sullivan and Smith got back to back RBIs. In the fourth, Sullivan again had a RBI double, while Smith had a two-run single.
Sullivan scored a run in the first on a RBI single by third baseman Rob Vogt.

Freshman pitcher Chris Ryder (Douglassville, Pa./Holy Name) got the win in game one in relief of junior Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson). Ryder went four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one.

In the night cap, Sullivan capped a four-run ninth with a single to right center. Ursinus went into the inning down 7-4 and was down to its final out when junior center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk by freshman designated hitter Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville,Pa./Boyertown). After junior first baseball Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) was hit by a pitch, senior left fielder Danny Ludwig (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) walked to force in a run. Freshman designated hitter Ralph Aurora (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) had a two run single scoring Schnell and Guthridge.

After junior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) walked, Sullivan stroked the game-winning hit.

Ryder got the win in game two, getting two outs in the top of the ninth.

Ludwig was 3-for-4 in game two, while Gresh and Sullivan had two hits each.
