Baseball swept by McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel clinched the fourth and final spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs as the Green Terror (24-10, 11-7 Centennial) swept a doubleheader from Ursinus (18-21, 7-11 Centennial) on Sunday afternoon.

The Green Terror won game one 4-3, while breaking open a 5-5 tie with three late runs in an 8-5 win in game two.

In the opener, Ursinus took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as senior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had a two-run single with one out that scored senior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) and senior third baseman Joel Ackerman (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional).

McDaniel scored three runs in the bottom of the third, before Ursinus tied it in the sixth as Sullivan collected another RBI, with a run scoring single that scored senior designated hitter Vince Chiaro (Pitman, N.J./Pitman).

Sullivan finished game one with two hits and three RBI, while senior Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse), senior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) each collected two hits.

Junior A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) went the distance and took the loss, striking out one and walking three.

In game two, Ursinus trailed 2-0 after the first inning, before tying the score in the top of the fifth at 2-all.

Ursinus had tied the score again in the seventh, before McDaniel played three runs in the eighth to take the win.

In game two, Ursinus collected six hits with senior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) getting two hits, while Gresh had a double.

Junior Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) started the game, pitching five innings. He struck out one and walked three. Sophomore Steve Berardi  (Hartsville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) took the loss, as he gave up three earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Chris Ryder (Douglasville, Pa./Holy Name) gave up two hits in .2 innings of work.

Ursinus closes the season on Tuesday against Neumann.
