Baseball battles Hopkins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BALTIMORE, Md. – Beginning a week of eight games in seven days, bookended by doubleheaders, the Ursinus College baseball team gave third-ranked Johns Hopkins all it could handle in a doubleheader, before dropping both games Sunday.

The Bears lost game one 4-2 and then dropped the second game by an 8-2 score.

The first game saw Johns Hopkins take an early 3-0 lead on an RBI double by Jeff Lynch, who would later score on a RBI single by Ryan Zakszeski. Ursinus answered back as freshman first baseman Chris Jablonski scored in the sixth on an error on a single by sophomore shortstop Alex Manacher. After Hopkins added one more in the bottom of the seventh, Ursinus scored its other run in the eighth as Manacher singled home senior catcher Kevin Wilson. Manacher would finish a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, while Wilson and Jablonski each collected two hits.

Senior pitcher Steve Berardi took the loss, falling to 0-5. Despite the loss, he did strikeout six and allowed just six hits. Junior Chris Ryder pitched one inning of relief for the Bears.

In game two, Ursinus (6-23, 2-11 Centennial) led early as Jablonski singled home junior second baseman Ralph Aurora for a 1-0 lead.

Hopkins would tie the score in the fourth, and then take a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

The Bears would again tie the score in the sixth as Wilson singled home freshman third baseman Sean Pisik. Hopkins, however, would score two in the bottom of the sixth and then plated four in the seventh to put the game away.

Sophomore right fielder James Hoff went 2-for-4 in game two against the Blue Jays (30-3, 12-1 Centennial).

Senior right hander Ryan Furlong pitched six innings, striking out four and walking one as he fell to 0-3.

Ursinus continues its barnstorming schedule Monday with a make-up game with Haverford at The T, starting at 4 p.m.
