Baseball splits with Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College baseball team earned a key Centennial split on Saturday against Washington.

In game one, Ursinus dropped a 4-1 decision to the Shoremen, before holding on in game two for a 7-6 win over the Shoremen.

In game one, Ursinus (6-14, 2-4 Centennial) gave up a three-spot to Washington (12-13, 3-3 Centennial) in the first inning as shortstop Nick Marinelli hit a RBI double scoring center fielder Sean Connole, followed by Marinelli scoring on a sacrifice RBI by right fielder Scott Matthews.

Designated hitter Tyler Cotterell would score on a single by Dennis Thomas.

Thomas would score in the fourth on a single by Kyle Mikula.

Ursinus got on the board in the sixth as singled to left. The ball was mishandled by the left fielder, allowing freshman third baseman Sean Pisik (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) to score.

Ursinus would finish with five hits in the game.

Junior right hander Steve Berardi (Hartsville, Pa./Holy Ghost) took the loss, falling to 0-4. He struck out five and walked three while allowing nine hits.

In game two, Ursinus trailed after one inning before scoring three in the second as Pisik singled home junior designated hitter Jake Neiman (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown), followed by a two-run single from senior centerfielder Ryan Furlong.

Ursinus tacked on two more in the third as Jake Kohler tripled to right center scoring freshman first baseball Chris Jablonski (Galloway, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) and senior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick).

Wilson would single home Ralph Aurora in the fourth to give Ursinus a 6-3 lead. He would later drive in sophomore right fielder James Hoff (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) in the ninth for a much needed insurance run as Washington scored twice in the ninth to cut the Ursinus lead to 7-6.

Hoff and Wilson finished game two with two hits each, while Furlong was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Sophomore right hander Alex Manacher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) got the win, improving to 2-0 as he struck out four and walked two in seven innings of work. Junior left hander Chris Ryder (Douglassvile, Pa./Holy Name) got the save, as he pitched the final 2/3 innings.
