Softball drops Centennial opener

CARLISLE, Pa. – In the Centennial opener for both teams, the Dickinson Red Devils swept a Centennial Conference doubleheader from Ursinus on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Park.

In the opener, Dickinson broke open a tie game with four runs in the sixth in a 7-3 win, while in game two, Dickinson (10-1, 2-0 Centennial) again scored four runs in the sixth in a 8-4 victory over the Bears (6-7, 0-2 Centennial).

In game one, Ursinus took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Bears got on the board first when junior Meredith Watters (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) scored on a fielding error on a grounder by sophomore Casey Derella (Millville, N.J./Millville). Derella and senior Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) would score on a two-run double by senior Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township). Dickinson would add two back in the bottom of the inning on a home run, but, the Bears would still lead 3-2.

In the fifth, a RBI single by Casey Ditzler would score Nicole Piet with no outs to tie the score at 3-all.

In the sixth, a wild pitch and a RBI single and a two-run single allowed the Red Devils to take the lead. Becca Garlinger had the two-run double with two outs.

Junior Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) took the loss for the Bears, as she allowed six hits and five earned runs in 2.2 innings in relief of freshman Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md./Perryville). Willis went 3.1 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out one.

In game two, Derella led off the game with a home run to give the Bears a 1-0 lead after one-half inning. After Dickinson struck back with two in the bottom of the first, Ursinus tied the score at 2-all when freshman Bridget Winay (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) scored on an error on a grounder by Goldstein with two outs.

The Red Devils scored in the third on a double by Grace Edelson to take a 3-2 lead. After scoring one in the fifth, Ursinus tied the score in the sixth on a RBI single by Goldstein and a sacrifice RBI by Heinke.

Dickinson would score four in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of two Ursinus errors. In game two, Ursinus had 13 hits with Derella, Goldstein, freshman Rachel Hyman (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin), Winay and sophomore Carly Gartenberg (White Plains, N.Y./Westchester Hebrew) each getting two hits. Goldstein had two RBI.

Winay took the loss, striking out two and walking one while allowing just four earned runs.
