Baseball Overmatched at Haverford

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team fell into a 6-0 hole in the second inning and never recovered, dropping a 13-2 verdict to host Haverford in the second leg of a Centennial Conference doubleheader.

Junior C.J. Diana hit his first career home run for Ursinus (16-15, 2-8), but the highlights ended there as Haverford (20-10, 9-3) completed the season sweep and extended its winning streak in the series to seven.

The Fords racked up five extra-base hits, including a home run by Ben Furlong, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Thomas Vollaro had two hits and scored two runs, while Ben Verducci had three RBI and Yannick Villanueva (2-for-2) and Nick Ott (2-for-4) drove in a pair of runs apiece. Haverford finished with 15 hits on the afternoon.

John Miraglia (2-3) threw eight effective innings for Haverford, striking out five and allowing two runs on eight hits.

After freshman starter David Drea (2-1) got the first out of the second, the next seven Haverford batters reached base – three on doubles, three on singles, and another on an error. That chased Drea and lifted the Fords to a 6-0 lead that was never in doubt.

Junior Alex Campbell led Ursinus with a career-high three hits, and senior Chris Jablonski continued his climb up the program's all-time charts with two more of his own. That moved Jablonski into a tie with Dan Tomlinson for third in school history, and the first baseman needs one more knock to become only the third Ursinus player to reach 150 career hits.

Junior Seth Regensburg struck out six in 2.2 innings of relief, and junior Connor Moriarty worked 1.2 perfect frames, striking out one.

The Bears will look to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday, when they honor Jablonski, Vince Piccioni, Sean Pisik, and William DiCiurcio as part of Senior Day prior to taking on first-place Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference twofer.
