Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior ace Seth Regensburg twirled the first complete-game shutout of his career and received plenty of help from his quick-strike offense to lead the Ursinus College baseball team past Franklin & Marshall, 9-0, in Centennial Conference action Friday.

Regensburg tossed a three-hitter and did not allow a Diplomat to advance past second base in a thoroughly dominant performance on the mound. The left-hander worked around four walks and struck out seven against a Franklin & Marshall squad that came in leading the conference in runs.

With the victory, and Johns Hopkins' 6-5 triumph at Gettysburg, Ursinus took over sole possession of second place in the CC standings, one game behind the Blue Jays.

The Bears (19-6, 6-2), who improved to 8-1 in road games, had this one well in hand before Regensburg even took the mound, scoring six runs in the first inning and later tacking on three more in the third. Senior Austin Kurey finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while classmate Vincent Terry delivered a two-run double in the third to register three RBI.

Diplomats starter Andrew Mascis retired the first batter of the game, but it was all downhill from there, as the next five Bears reached to send the Blue and White scurrying to the bullpen. Senior Alex Campbell drew a one-out walk and went first to third on freshman Alex Mumme's single before senior CJ Diana was plunked by a pitch to load the bases.

Kurey singled up the middle to bring across the first two runs of the game, and sophomore Carter Usowski followed with an RBI single to left-center to chase Mascis. An RBI groundout by Terry and a two-run single by freshman Dom Fiorentino with two outs capped Ursinus' huge opening salvo.

The Bears added three more runs in the third, starting with an RBI double by senior Kieran Geyer. Terry's two-bagger down the left-field line made it 9-0.

Regensburg (5-1) had little trouble all afternoon, and had an answer on the few occasions in which the Diplomats mounted a threat. The home side had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but Regensburg induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Franklin & Marshall put its first two aboard in the sixth, but the left-hander got two fly-outs and a pop-out. He polished off his first career shutout and fourth complete game with a swinging strikeout.

Diana scored twice and stole a base for the Bears, with Geyer also scoring twice and adding an RBI.

The baseball team welcomes Gettysburg to Thomas Field for a critical CC doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
