Volleyball Splits Homecoming Slate

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team split its homecoming doubleheader on Saturday.

The Bears pulled their record to 4-7 after the day's action.

Rowan 3, Ursinus College 0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-22)

The Bears got out to a quick start against the visiting Profs (5-5), creating a 19-11 lead in the first set, but some untimely mistakes allowed Rowan to put together a run at the end to take the set, 26-24. Sophomore Kelly Piotrowicz tallied three kills in the frame.

Ursinus struggled in the second set, digging itself an 8-1 deficit early, before pulling to 11-5. That's when Rowan turned on the jets and manufactured another run, extending the lead to 19-5. The Bears were thrown another curveball when senior co-captain Allison Raff went down with an injury.

Set No. 3 was back-and-forth between the two squads. Each team traded points through the first portion of the set, bringing the score to 9-6 in favor of the Profs. Rowan strung together four points to extend its lead led by services from Erin Keegan, who dominated from the back line.

Senior Taylor McCartney stepped up to fill the void left by Raff, leading the team with 12 kills. Junior Sydney Gonzalez recorded a team-high 16 digs while also chipping in a pair of aces.

Ursinus College 3, Trinity (D.C.) 0 (25-5, 25-12, 25-5)

The Bears made easy work of the Tigers (0-4), recording 31 aces – the most in a single game in program history.

Head coach Cecily Scavicchio rotated in a handful of younger players to get some experience, and the youth found success – especially from the service line. Five players notched career-highs in aces: sophomore Lauren Novotny had a team-high of six with a handful of freshmen trailing her: Emily Harris (4), Hannah Merges (5) and Meghan O'Leary (3) also had career-bests while classmate Paige DeAlba tied her personal best mark of five (9/8, vs. Albright).

Novotny and classmate Miranda Foster each totaled a team-high five kills.

The Bears continue their homestand on Tuesday with a CC opener vs. Swarthmore.
