Miller's Shutout Secures Senior Day Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Alexis Miller's latest gem continued a season-long trend for the Ursinus College softball team, which notched its fourth straight doubleheader split thanks to the sophomore's shutout in Game 2 of Saturday's Senior Day series with Gettysburg.

After being one-hit in a 6-0 loss in the opener, the Bears (4-4) salvaged another split on the right arm of Miller, who worked around constant traffic on the basepaths to toss a seven-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

Before the opener, Ursinus paid tribute to seniors Delaney Baker, Morgan Comfort, Megan Hasulak, Gabby Ilyes, Amanda Ladzinski, Heather Lazer, Kailey Martin, and Alyssa Myers.

Game 1

The Bears hit some balls hard but could get nothing going against Megan Hughes, who allowed only a soft pop-up by Lazer that dropped between two defenders in the bottom of the first. Ursinus put two runners on in the fourth and another in the sixth on errors, but Hughes did not allow another ball to elude her defense.

Hughes, who has yet to allow an earned run this season, struck out four and walked one.

Gettysburg (5-1, 3-1) did almost all of its scoring in the second, sending nine to the plate in a five-run outburst.

Ilyes was phenomenal in relief of Comfort, tossing five innings without allowing a run. Myers also contributed, throwing out a runner at second base.

Game 2

Miller dueled all afternoon with the Bullets' Jasmin Herrera, who matched her zero for zero through the first four frames.

The Bears finally put a dent in Herrera's armor when Julia Eckels led off the fifth with a slicing liner that got down in center and rolled all the way to the fence for a triple. Lazer followed with a liner to center, a sacrifice fly to score Eckels with the game's first run.

It was the only one Miller would need, though she got another in the sixth. Hasulak led off with an infield single, then Martin dropped down a beautiful bunt to move her to second. Mackenzie Brennan was in a bang-bang play at first, but the Gettysburg first baseman dropped the ball and allowed Hasulak to motor around second.

Miller allowed seven hits and walked a pair, working her way in and out of a number of jams. The Bullets put two on in four different innings, including a first-and-third, one-out situation in the fourth. Jordan Moore fielded a hard grounder and came up throwing, nailing the lead runner at the plate for the second out before taking another ground ball to the bag at third to end the threat.

Gettysburg stranded runners on second and third in the fifth and put their first two on in the sixth, but Miller buckled down once more and induced three softly hit outs. She tossed an easy 1-2-3 in the seventh to lock down her latest win.

The Bears finished with nine hits in Game 2, with Hasulak going 2-for-2 to join Brennan and Eckels with multiple knocks.
