Baseball Falls in Extras to Muhlenberg at Coca-Cola Park

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, PA. - The Ursinus College baseball team was able to force extra innings against Muhlenberg on Friday afternoon, but eventually fell 4-3 in 13 innings. The Bears tied the game at 3-3 with two outs in the ninth inning after a Peter Balos single to centerfield scored Solomon Griffith.

With the loss, Ursinus falls to 9-16 overall and 2-4 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Mules improved to 12-14 on the season and 1-7 in conference play.

Muhlenberg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a single from Trevor Virno scored Ryan Hebert from second. Freshman Connor Bogansky started on the mound for the Bears and was able to escape trouble after forcing a ground-out to the ensuing batter. Bogansky pitched 4.1 innings while allowing five hits and one earned run on his first start of the season.

Ursinus tied the game at one a piece in the fourth inning after a bases-loaded walk scored Tim Pyne from third. Pyne opened the inning with a single to right field before advancing to second after a Balos single to left field. Dylan Runsdorf loaded the bases after a free pass. Andrew Richter was also awarded a free base, but Muhlenberg escaped the jam after an infield fly and a fly out stranded three runners.

David Morgan relieved Bogansky in the fifth inning and was able to escape a bases-loaded jam after a lineout to second base with two outs. The Mules responded by adding a run in the sixth inning after a free pass scored Hebert from third. The resilience of the Bears showed as they once again answered by tying the game at 2-2 in the seventh, after Tim Pyne lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Dylan Crammer.

Muhlenberg's Jonathan Toth made the score 3-2, after a leadoff homerun in the bottom half of the seventh. The Bears were able to load the bases in the eighth, but a strikeout stranded three more runners to keep the score 3-2. Senior Luke Verga came in to pitch in the eighth and inherited a bases-loaded jam with one out. Verga used a groundball and a strikeout to strand three runners for the Mules.

In the ninth inning, Ursinus tied the score at three a piece after Balos drove a single into centerfield scoring Griffith from third. Both teams' bullpens played pivotal roles in the late innings as each team continued to shut down the opposing offenses to keep the score tied at 3-3 heading into the 13th inning. For the Bears' Joey Mullen and Verga combined to pitch 5.1 innings allowing just two hits while fanning six batters.

Muhlenberg's walk-off came in the 13th inning after a shallow fly ball to centerfield forced a tough throw to third and Caleb Tereska advanced home after the throw sailed out of play.

The Bears will return to action tomorrow as they host Centennial Conference foe McDaniel for a doubleheader at Thomas Field.
