COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - The Ursinus College baseball team was able to tie the game at three a piece in the 6th inning, but a home run in the seventh proved to be the difference in a 5-3 decision to Haverford College on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bears fell to 11-23 overall and 4-11 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Fords improved to 17-17 on the season and 8-7 in Centennial Conference action.
Haverford jumped on the board first, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Harry Genth led off the inning with a double to center field before advancing to third with a stolen base and scoring via a sacrifice fly. The Fords added two more runs after a double from Zach Buck and a single from Zach Landry each scored a run.
In the second inning, the Bears made the score 3-1 after Falcone launched a homerun to left field. Bogansky came into the game in the third inning and delivered two innings while striking out two batters. Cantor blasted his first career homerun in the fifth inning after he connected on a 0-2 pitch. Ursinus tied the game at three a piece in the sixth inning after Solomon Griffith scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Griffith reached base after a one out double down the left field and advanced to third on a passed ball.
With two outs in the seventh, Haverford regained the lead after a two-run homerun from Zach Becker made the score 5-3. Freshman David Morgan escaped the jam after a fielder's choice retired the side.
The Bears battled in the ninth inning as Peter Balos reached scoring position with one out after a double down the left field line. Andrew Richter was next up and reached base via a walk while Balos advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ursinus brought in Max Gadsden to pinch run at first and he swiped second base to put the tying run into scoring position. Haverford's August Williams escaped the jam after recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. The Bears collected six hits in the game, while three errors on the scorecard were the most in a game, since April 2nd against Johns Hopkins.
Ursinus will return to action on Thursday as they host Rosemont College before a rematch with Haverford on Friday from Thomas Field.
