The Ursinus Bears Football Team hosts McDaniel on Saturday for its annual homecoming contest.
Â
Last week, the Bears dropped a 42-14 contest to No. 7/10 Johns Hopkins last Saturday afternoon on the road. Ursinus fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before scoring a touchdown to make it 14-7. The Bears countered another Blue Jay touchdown with one of their own to make it 21-14 in the second quarter. Unfortunately for the Bears, that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the game as Johns Hopkins closed the game out with 21 unanswered points. Ursinus had two drives go deep in the second half but turned the ball over on downs on both occasions. Â
Â
Meanwhile, McDaniel dropped a tough 27-17 contest at home to Franklin & Marshall. McDaniel fell behind and found themselves in a 20-3 deficit in the early portion of the second quarter. The Green Terror got within 10 points twice of the Diplomats but ultimately could not get any further.Â
Â
Â
LAST MEETING: Last season, the Bears dominated McDaniel 56-17 under the lights last year at home. Ursinus used a balanced offensive attack to gain a 28-3 advantage halfway through the second quarter and eventually went up 35-10 into halftime. Ursinus added three more second half scores to finish off the win with all of them coming in the third quarter.
Â
Â
CONSISTENT THREAT: Junior wide receiver
Justin Collier has racked up the receptions in a big way since returning from injury in week four. Collier led all receivers on Saturday against Johns Hopkins with career highs of nine catches for 124 yards while hauling in a pair of touchdown passes. He has surged to the team lead with 30 receptions in just four games and has caught at least six passes in all four games. Collier also leads the team with 355 yards in those receiving yards.
Â
Â
CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP: Senior defensive end
Ryan Bodolus caused more problems in the Johns Hopkins backfield last Saturday afternoon. Fresh off a 2.5 sack performance against William Paterson, Bodolus added another multi-sack lead to maintain his Centennial Conference lead. He now sits just a half sack off the lead in Division III for sacks with 11 and is six off tying the single-season record of 17 set by his father, Dave Bodolus, in 1986. Bodolus also continued his streak of tallying at least one sack to 11 games that dates to this weekend last year against Gettysburg.
Â
Â
GETTING OFF THE FIELD: The Bears continue to lead the Centennial Conference in third down conversion defense as opponents are just converting 26.5 percent of the time which is also good for 15th in all of Division III. Ursinus also is currently allowing the fewest first downs per game at 14.4. Ursinus held Johns Hopkins to go just 4-of-12 (33.3%) on third down conversions last Saturday which lost them the Centennial lead in that category. They held Rowan in September to go just 1-of-11 (0.9%) on third down.
Â
Â
BEARS ON HOMECOMING: Since 2010, the Bears have posted a 9-3 record in homecoming games behind winning five of their last six homecoming contests. Ursinus dominated Moravian 44-17 in their 2022 homecoming game for their second straight homecoming win. Ursinus last hosted McDaniel for a homecoming contest back in 2011 and edged the Green Terror 35-28 behind a late touchdown. Saturday's contest will conclude with the presentation of the Kenneth E. Walker trophy that will be awarded to the top performing Ursinus player in the contest. Former quarterback
Jack Psenicska earned the accolade last season following a five touchdown pass performance.
Â
Â
CLIMBING THE LIST: Senior linebacker
Brett Gross recorded a game-high 10 tackles (five solo) against Johns Hopkins this past Saturday. It was his third double-digit tackle performance of the season and is up to a Centennial-leading 56 tackles on the year. Gross also continued to climb the Ursinus all-time career tackle list as he moved into seventh all-time with 248. Former Bear and current Minnesota Vikings assistant Paul Geunther still holds the career tackle record with 366.
Â
Â
ANCHORING THE LINE: Junior right tackle
Trey Williams continues to be a consistent force on the Bears offensive line. Williams impressed last season by earning All-Centennial second team honors and once again has showed this season why he is one of the best at his position in the Centennial Conference. Williams has started all seven games at right tackle and 18 straight games overall that leads any current Bear on offense. Williams has helped the Bears rush for 130.6 yards as a team and keeping a consistent passing game that averages 249.0 yards per game.

Â
SCOUTING THE GREEN TERROR: The Green Terror have seen three different quarterbacks for extended periods of time this season. First-year Angel Granado Jr. has started the last three games for the Green Terror and had a solid showing against Franklin & Marshall last week by going 28 of 47 for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions. Granado Jr. is also a threat on the ground as he has 241 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Graduate student running back Trent Gaskins leads the ground game with a team-high 422 yards and three touchdowns. Graduate student wide receiver Sean Carter leads the team with 426 yards on 50 catches and senior Hunter Sigler has caught a team-high five touchdown passes. Sigler had a big night against the Bears last season with six catches for 167 yards and a pair of scores. First-year Logan Marsh is also having a solid collegiate debut season as he ranks second on the team with 378 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
            Â
On defense, the Green Terror graduate student linebacker Mike Dunn leads the team and ranks second to Gross in the Centennial Conference with 50 tackles (24 solo) while adding 7.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks. Senior defensive back Jevin Tranquillo is a threat in the secondary by ranking second on the team with 38 tackles, 7.0 TFL, and three sacks. Senior defensive lineman Mike Cunningham is a strong threat on the line with 5.0 TFL. First-year defensive back Chris Wilson has a pair of interceptions for McDaniel to lead the team.
