COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's wrestling earned a tri-match split on Saturday afternoon, defeating Southern Virginia 25-8, and falling to Western New England University, 26-19.
 

Sophomore Jocelyn Lass, first-year Mandy Gavares (101lbs), and Shelly Gushue (191lbs) each finished with a perfect 2-0 record on the day.

Western New England 26, Ursinus 19
 
During their first match against Western New England, the Bears jumped out an early 4-1 lead as Gavares tallied a 14-4 victory by technical superiority over Gianna Hernandez. The Golden Bears (WNE) received a forfeit at 116lbs, while sophomore Kalli Roskos won by forfeit at 123lbs to give Ursinus a 9-6 match lead.
 

Western New England regained an 11-9 match lead during the 130lb bout, as after trialing 13-6, Linda Holeman tallied a victory by fall over Ursinus first-year Stacy Bloomfield at the 5:40-mark. At 136lbs, junior Lauren Gherman fell by pinfall at the 1:45-mark to WNE's Sabrina Sedor, while the Golden Bears collected a pinfall at 143lbs to take a 21-9 advantage. After a Bears forfeit at 155lbs, Ursinus received victories by forfeit at 170lbs and 191lbs, but fell by a final tally of 26-19.

 
Lass earned a technical superiority during her exhibition bout at 116lbs over WNE's Ariel Casella by a score of 12-2.

 
Ursinus 25, Southern Virginia 8
 
With the dual starting at 170lbs, first-year Emma Matera gave Ursinus an early 4-0 advantage with an 11-0 victory by technical superiority over SVU's Katherine Robbins. After Gushue tallied a victory by forfeit at 191lbs, Gavares gave Ursinus a 14-0 lead. After double forfeits at 109lbs and 116lbs, Roskos dropped a tough 10-7 decision at 123lbs to SVU's Abby Pilkington.
 
The Bears responded at 130lbs as Bloomfield picked up a victory by fall at the 1:30-mark over SVU's Nathalie Erazo to extend the Bears match lead to 20-3. Gherman fell by fall during the 136lb bout, but first-year Paisley Fox recorded a first-period pinfall at the 1:15-mark to give Ursinus the 25-8 dual victory. Lass and first-year Gianna Perez each collected victories by pinfall in their exhibition matches for Ursinus.
 

"The women battled today," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "We showed a lot of energy and effort out there, and that's what matters most at this point in the season. We have things to clean up, but overall, we wrestled very well. Once everyone gets healthy and makes their descent into their weight classes, we are going to be a force to reckon with. We're looking forward to the New Standard Invitational at York and to show what we're really capable of doing." 
 
 
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, December 2^nd as they travel to York, Pennsylvania for the New Standard Invitational.
