WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Juniors
Cloe Charlesworth and
Mandy Gavares punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships on Saturday evening, leading the Ursinus women's wrestling team at the Region II Championships.
Charlesworth became the first women's wrestler in Ursinus history to repeat as a regional champion, while Gavares earned runner-up honors at 103 pounds for the second consecutive season. To qualify for the national championships, wrestlers must place within the top three of their respective weight classes.
Ursinus received standout performances throughout their lineup as sophomore
Olivia Guy (110), junior
Stacy Bloomfield (131) and first-year
Jurelys Peguero Del Rosario (180) each placed fourth. Senior
Kalli Roskos (124) and junior
Paisley Fox (138) both finished sixth for the Bears.
The Bears finished fifth in the team standings with 103 points. No. 7 Lehigh University won the team title with 151.5 points. West Liberty placed second with 116 points, followed by Eastern (114), East Stroudsburg (109.5) and Ursinus to round out the top five of the 16-team field.
"We competed really well this weekend and the coaching staff is proud of the team's effort," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "The NCAA qualifier is incredibly challenging. We left it all out on the mat and we're excited for Cloe and Mandy. Obviously, our hearts break for the girls who came so close to qualifying but fell just short. It is a tough pill to swallow, but we'll keep improving from here."
At 145 pounds, Charlesworth was sensational for the Bears, finishing 3-0 with three pins to earn her second career regional title. In her opening bout Saturday, she recorded a 36-second fall over Pitt-Johnstown's Emma Hoppe to clinch her berth to nationals.
In the finals against Eastern's Zoey Haines, Charlesworth jumped out to a 5-2 lead midway through the first period but entered the final stanza trailing 6-5. Haines extended her lead to 10-5 at the 2:48 mark, but four straight points trimmed the deficit to 10-9 with two minutes remaining. After Haines increased her advantage to 13-9, Charlesworth responded with a pin at the 4:49 mark to capture the 145-pound title.
Gavares opened in the semifinal round with a 12-2 major decision over Lehigh's Hannah Mack to secure her second consecutive trip to nationals. In the title match, Gavares fell 13-3 to East Stroudsburg's Olivia Klein to finish second at 103 pounds.
At 110 pounds, Guy dropped her opening bout by fall to East Stroudsburg's Teegan Sibble but responded in the consolation semifinals with a 31-second pin of Bethany's Ashley Campbell to reach the third-place bout. Guy ultimately fell by criteria to Muhlenberg's Sylvyn Parham to finish fourth overall. She closes out her sophomore season with a 26-10 record with 14 victories coming by fall.
Roskos fell in the semifinals at 124 pounds, dropping an 8-0 decision to Lock Haven's Jayleah Pletz. She later fell 3-3 via criteria in the consolation bracket before finishing sixth. Roskos closes her career as the program's all-time wins leader with 83 victories and as a two-time NCWWC national qualifier.
"Kalli had a heck of a career, and I am so thankful for her contributions," Jamison added. "This program was built on her back, and she is an incredible leader. We're going to miss her tremendously."
Bloomfield placed fourth at 138 pounds with a 3-2 record. She dropped her opening match 6-1 to West Liberty's Cassia Zammit before responding with a 4-4 victory via criteria over East Stroudsburg's Gianna Amendola to advance to the consolation finals. In the third-place match, Bloomfield built a 4-0 lead entering the second period, but a 12-4 run from Pitt-Johnstown's Makayla Pacilb proved decisive in a 12-8 loss. Bloomfield ends her season with a 28-10 record a team-high 11 victories by technical superiority.
Peguero Del Rosario shined in her regional debut with a fourth-place finish at 180 pounds. She fell 12-0 in the semifinals to top-seeded Isabella Phillips of Gannon before rebounding with a 12-0 technical fall over Cedar Crest's Janeyda Ortiz in the consolation semifinals. She later fell by pin to Lehigh's Genevieve An in the third-place bout to close out her rookie campaign.
Charlesworth and Gavares will compete at the NCAA Championships on March 6-7th at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
