Women's Wrestling Falls on the Road at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Ursinus College women's wrestling team won five bouts, but were edged on Sunday afternoon by Elmira College, 26-23.

With the loss, Ursinus now sits at 2-2 overall while the Eagles improved to 5-5 on the season. "We couldn't be prouder of how the women competed today," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "Elmira is a tough team and we fought for every point. Unfortunately, we had to forfeit three weight classes today, but winning five of the seven matches against a top-20 team is huge for the program. Once everyone is healthy and at the right weights next semester, we are going to make a lot of noise. We have a well-earned break coming up and then we'll get ready for the Citrus Invitational in Florida."

First-year Mandy Gavares got the Bears on the board with a 33 second pin at 101lbs over Elmira's Taylor Goguen to give Ursinus a 5-0 advantage. Gavares earned a quick takedown before converting on a cradle to earn her second victory of the season by pinfall. The Eagles quickly regained a 10-5 lead as they were awarded back-to-back forfeits at 109lbs and 116lbs.

At 123lbs, sophomore Kalli Roskos collected a come from behind 6-5 decision to cut the Bears deficit to 11-8. Trailing in the match 5-4, Roskos countered a shot attempt from Elmira's Megan Edwards and spun around to gain a 6-5 advantage with 1:13 remaining in the match. With under a minute remaining, Roskos stuffed two separate shot attempts to earn the victory.

Ursinus regained a 13-11 match lead following the 130lb bout, as first-year Stacy Bloomfield recorded a victory via pinfall at the 1:37-mark of the opening period. Just under a minute into the first period, Bloomfield tallied the opening take down before collecting the fall via a "half nelson".

At 136lbs, Ursinus added to their lead as junior Lauren Gherman recorded a victory via a medical forfeit at the 3:00-mark to give the Bears a 18-11 advantage. Gherman was trailing at the end of the first period, but unfortunately Elmira's Leslie Monterosa was unable to finish the match resulting in the medical forfeit.

At 143lbs, first-year Paisley Fox fell by fall to Elmira's Zoey Lints to cut the Bears lead to 18-16. Elmira regained a 21-18 match lead after 155lbs, as Elmira's Skylah Chakouian recorded a victory via forfeit. In the following bout at 170lbs, first-year Emma Matera collected a victory by fall at the 1:25-mark over Hazel Dahlquist to give Ursinus a 23-21 lead. Matera earned a trio of takedowns to open the match before tallying her fourth consecutive victory by pinfall and improving her season record to 10-2.

In the final bout, first-year Shelly Gushue fell by fall to Elmira's Tayana Labady resulting in the 26-23 defeat for Ursinus.

The Bears will return to action on Friday, December 29th as they travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the Citrus Invitational.
