Lass and Roskos Advance to Nationals as Women's Wrestling Competes at Regionals

ERIE, Pa. – Ursinus College first-years Jocelyn Lass and Kalli Roskos each recorded fourth place finishes at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Region 1 Championships to qualify for Nationals and led the women's wrestling team to an eighth-place team finish.

The Bears tallied 34 team points and recorded the highest placing of the first-year programs. Sacred Heart won the regional championship behind a total of 176 points while Gannon University finished second with 172.5 points and East Stroudsburg University rounded out the top-three with 135.5 points.

"I'm so proud of how the women competed today," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "We were the highest placing first year program and the only one with a National Qualifier. We've grown so much this year and it showed today."

At 123lbs, Roskos dropped her opening match via pinfall to East Stroudsburg's Mia Macaluso at the 2:36-mark. She bounced back in the consolations with a 5-2 decision over Gannon's Jayden Bazemore to advance to the third-place match. In the consolation finals, Roskos matched up with East Stroudsburg's Mia Macaluso for a rematch as Roskos fell via an 8-1 decision.

Teammate Jocelyn Lass opened the tournament with a familiar face as Lass defeated Cedar Crest's Adrianna Dias via a 10-0 technical superiority to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Lass matched up with the No. 2 seed and sixth ranked wrestler at 116lbs in East Stroudsburg's Emily Klein resulting into a fall at the 5:22-mark. In the consolation semifinals, she fell to Gannon's Samantha Larsen via an 8-2 decision. In the fifth-place match, she recorded the victory via an injury default to set up a true fourth-place match with East Stroudsburg's Waverly Kanelong. Lass also earned the trip to Nationals and a fourth-place finish after defeating Kanelong via an 11-3 decision.

Jamison added on Lass and Roskos performances, "Jocelyn and Kalli showed an incredible amount of poise today in arguably the two toughest weights in the region. Jocelyn had to bounce back from two losses to get a true fourth-place match and wrestled well in that final match to punch her ticket. Kalli was unseeded and avenged a loss from earlier this year in route to placing fourth.  That was a big win for Kalli, and she continues to close the gap on her competition."

Sophomore Lauren Gherman finished 1-3 on the day and recorded an eight-place finish in the 130lb bracket. She opened by falling to Gannon's Nikoly Dos Santos via technical superiority (10-0) but bounced back in the consolations with a pinfall over Cedar Crest Brooke Holley at the 1:37-mark. In the seventh-place match, Gherman fell by fall to East Stroudsburg's Gianna Amendola at the 43 second mark of the first period.

Jamison speaks on Elizabeth Grace Harris season "I'd really like to thank senior Elizabeth Grace Harris for her leadership this season. Being a first-year wrestler is incredibly difficult, especially at the collegiate level. Grace was able to manage learning a new sport while serving as a mentor for our younger women and she did it admirably. We're going to miss her next year terribly."

The Bears will return to action on Friday, March 4th as they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the 2023 NCWWC Championships.
