COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Isaiah Battle earned his second gold medal of the weekend and sophomore
Ethan Chambers knocked down a school record for the Ursinus Men's Track & Field team on day two of the Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Patterson Field on Saturday.
After two days, the Bears continued to stand in second place and are now up to 74 points which is 27 points off the leader Johns Hopkins. However, the Bears had a strong Saturday to set themselves up with a possible chance to rally and defend their crown from a year ago.
Battle earned his second his second gold medal of the weekend after winning the discus with a throw of 43.66 meters. He became the second Bear in three championships to win gold in the discus after Griffin McMann won it in 2021 while also avenging his defeat to Dylan DeMagistris of Muhlenberg in the event last season.
Chambers completed an outstanding showing in the decathlon by winning the silver medal with a school record 5,238 points. He bested the previous mark of 5,223 set by Jon Dickson back in 2008. Freshman
Logan Yanoff finished fourth in the decathlon with 5,048 points while
Sean Bowers placed sixth with 4,969 points.
Ursinus had a big day in sprints and hurdles by claiming the top seeds in the 100 meters, 110 meter hurdles, 200 meters, 400 meters, and 400 meter hurdles headed into the finals Sunday. Senior
Daniel Maloney recorded a personal best 14.90 in the 110 hurdle prelims to earn the top seed headed into Sunday and will be joined by junior
Devon Greaves plus freshman
Patrick Ryan. Greaves finished sixth with a time of 16.77 and Ryan followed just behind in seventh on his time of 16.85. Three Bears advanced to the finals of the 400 meters as junior
Collin Ney bested the prelims field with his time if 49.64. Senior
Daniel Tabor placed third on his time of 50.25 while classmate
Payton Stanziani came in sixth with his time of 50.37. Freshman
Aiden Tobin claimed the first of his two top seeds starting in the 100 meter prelims with his personal best time of 10.91 and Tabor placed third with a 10.99 that was also a personal best. Tobin then matched his personal best time of 21.97 to edge Tabor's 22.14 for the top seed in the 200 meters. Sophomore
Mason Jolivette took the top seed of the 400 meter hurdles behind his time of 57.24 during the prelims and Greaves placed third on his time of 58.13.
A pair of sophomores qualified for the finals of the 800 meters tomorrow as
Paul Faggioli and
Christian Rosado both blasted their previous personal bests to finish fifth and sixth in the prelims. Faggioli recorded a time of 1:54.85 while Rosado crossed the line at 1:55.69. Freshman
Liam Johnston had a strong showing in the 3,000 steeplechase by finishing sixth overall with his time of 9:42.67.
Freshman James Sims impressed by earning the bronze medal in the high jump after clearing the bar at a career best 1.85 meters. Freshman
David Piotrowski placed fifth with his mark of 1.80 meters and classmate
Markel Roberts-Jackson came in ninth after clearing the bar at 1.75 meters. Junior
Michael Agbeye finished seventh in the long jump after posting a personal best mark of 6.28 meters.
The 4x800 relay team of Johnston, Rosado, Faggioli, and junior
Tucker McGrath finished sixth overall with their time of 7:58.79.
The Bears will wrap up the Centennial Championships tomorrow, May 7th with the first event going off at 11:00 a.m.
