Five Wrestlers Place as Women's Wrestling Takes Fifth at Will Abele Open

RESULTS
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.
– Five women wrestlers earned top-five finishes leading the Ursinus College women's wrestling team to a fifth-place finish at the Will Abele Open on Sunday.

Nine wrestlers competed for the Bears combing for 15 total team points, while East Stroudsburg University won the team title with 55 total points. Elmira College (39) earned a second-place finish, Sacred Heart University (33) placed third, and Columbia University (16) took fourth overall.

"We competed really well today," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "This was an incredibly tough tournament with three nationally ranked programs. It was a great test for us as we prepare for the second half of our season, and it will serve us well moving forward. We have three tough duals coming up so we are looking forward to this week."

First-year Mandy Gavares shined for the Bears at 101lbs, earning the highest finish of the nine Bears with a second place nod behind a 2-1 record. After a bye in the opening round, Gavares collected a 20-10 victory by superiority at the 5:15-mark of the second period over Hiram's Lexi Doerflinger. Her victory over Doerflinger revenged a loss from earlier this season at the New Standard Invitational. During her semifinal match, Gavares advanced over the No. 1 seed and No. 10 ranked wrestler in the nation Sacred Heart's Aaliyah Payne-Parris by injury default. Unfortunately, in the finals Gavares fell by pinfall to ESU's Olivia Klein at the 1:48-mark to finish second.

At 170lbs, first-year Gianna Perez tallied a fourth-place finish behind a 1-2 record. Perez dropped her opening match by fall but bounced back in the consolation round with a 10-0 victory by superiority to advance into the consolation finals. In the third-place bout, Perez fell by fall to New England College's Karime Carmarena-Tejeda to finish fourth.

Sophomore Jocelyn Lass also recorded a fourth-place nod at 116lbs behind a 3-2 record. Lass opened with back-to-back victories to reach the championship semifinal round. She recorded a 4-0 decision over ESU's Madeline Ridge in her opening match before collecting a 10-0 technical superiority victory over WNE's Gianna Silva in the quarterfinals. During her semifinal match, Lass earned a two-point takedown with under ten seconds remaining, but Sacred Heart's Tatiana Walker advanced on criteria with the match tied at eight apiece. She bounced back in her next match recording a first period fall over ESU's Isabella Washington-Vasquez to reach the third place bout. In her final match, nearly completed the comeback but fell to Columbia's Leela Elliott via a 5-4 decision.

Sophomore Kalli Roskos opened with a 4-2 victory over ESU's Waverly Kanelong before dropping her semifinal match against Delaware Valley's Bridgette Schoultz via a fall. In the consolations, Roskos fell by a 4-3 decision to Elmira's Megan Edwards. Roskos won the fifth-place bout via injury default over Kanelong to finish with a 1-2 record. At 155lbs, first-year Emma Matera won each of her first three matches to advance the championship semifinal round. Matera collected a pinfall in her opening match before tallying a 10-0 technical superiority over Marymount's Alexandra Kotliarov. She defeated the No. 4 seed Delaware Valley's Gabby Reid in comeback fashion after recording back-to-back two-point moves in the final period. Matera suffered back-to-back losses before defeating Reid in the fifth-place bout via a 10-0 technical superiority to finish with a 4-2 record.

First-years Madyson Hickman (130lbs) and Stacy Bloomfield (136lbs) each collected victories within their respective weight classes.

The Bears return to action on Thursday, January 18th as they host Delaware Valley University for a dual meet inside Helfferich Hall at 6 p.m.
