FAIRFIELD, CT. – The Ursinus College women's wrestling team earned a split in a tri-match against No. 5 Sacred Heart University and Western New England University on Sunday evening.
The Bears were downed 31-12 against Sacred Heart before revenging a defeat this season by tallying a 30-13 victory over Western New England University.
With the split, Ursinus improves to 7-3 on the season in dual meets, and have won five of the last six duals.
No. 5 Sacred Heart 31, Ursinus 12
After a double forfeit at 101lbs, Ursinus faced an early 5-0 deficit as the Pioneers collected a pinfall at 109lbs to snag an early advantage. At 116lbs, sophomore
Jocelyn Lass tied the match at five a piece after collecting a pinfall at the 5:22-mark of the second period over Sacred Heart's Nohea Moniz. Tied 2-2 in the second period, Lass collected a takedown before using an armbar and a half to record the pinfall. The Pioneers bounced back with a pinfall at 123lbs and a 6-4 decision at 130lbs to regain a 13-6 lead halfway through the dual. Ursinus brought their deficit to three at 136lbs, as first-year
Paisley Fox recorded a first period fall over Sacred Heart's Aliza Leander to make the score 13-11. Fox stuffed a shot attempt before using an arm-bar to tally the fall at the 1:13-mark of the opening period. The Pioneers answered by winning each of the four bouts in route to the 31-12 victory.
"We're Incredibly proud of how the women competed today", Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "This was a tough stretch for us with three weigh-ins within eight days, and we powered through it. Sacred Heart is ranked fifth in the country for a reason, and we didn't back down."

Mandy Gavares collected a forfeit at 101lbs to open the meet. Next, Lass picked up a 10-0 technical fall over WNE's Ariel Casella, and sophomore
Kalli Roskos recorded a pinfall at 123lbs. Western New England responded with a 4-2 decision at 130lbs and a pinfall at 136lbs to cut into the Bears 15-8 lead. Ursinus bounced back with victories by fall from Fox (143lbs) and first-year
Emma Matera (155lbs) and held a commanding 25-8 lead with two matches to go. During the 143lb bout, Fox defender an early shot attempt before countering the attack and collecting the fall at the 2:02-mark of the opening period. Matera also demonstrated some offensive power by earning two early takedowns before locking in a near sided cradle to pin WNE's Kendall Branchaud at the 3:53-mark of the second period. In the final two weight classes, each team traded forfeits resulting in the 30-13 victory for the Bears.
Jamison added "Getting the win over WNE shows how far we've come since November. We lost to them early in the season and to see the improvement is encouraging for everyone, especially since we unexpectedly had two starters out against them tonight."
