Six Women's Wrestlers Place at PA Collegiate Championships

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Behind six place-winners, the Ursinus College women's wrestling team earned a third-place finish at the PA Collegiate Championships on Sunday afternoon from East Stroudsburg University.

Ursinus was the top Division III school in the standings behind 26 team points and improved by four spots from last year's tournament. East Stroudsburg won the team title with 47 points, while Lock Haven totaled 39 points and placed second. Behind the Bears, Delaware Valley (21 points) took fourth place, Gannon University tallied 17 points and placed fifth, while York College (6th- 14 points), Cedar Crest College (7th – six points), and Alvernia (8th – five points) rounded out the eight-team tournament.

First-year Emma Matera (155lbs) was the lone champion for the Bears, but first-year Mandy Gavares (101lbs) and sophomore Kalli Roskos (123lbs) each reached the finals and earned second-place nods. Meanwhile, a trio of first years each reached the consolation finals as Stacy Bloomfield (130lbs) and Paisley Fox (136lbs) collected fourth place finishes, while Cloe Charlesworth recorded a bronze medal at 143lbs. Charlesworth also was awarded the Most Pins Award by recording three falls in just 5:26 of action on the mat.

"The women wrestled fantastic today and the coaching staff couldn't be more proud," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "For us to finish third while only filling seven weight classes due to injuries, really shows the fortitude of this group. The girls are starting to believe in themselves and we're looking forward to the next few weeks as we finish out our dual meet portion of the season."

At 155lbs, Matera was dominant throughout the tournament tallying a perfect 3-0 mark and currently holds the team lead for victories with a 21-6 record. As the No. 1 seed, she opened with a fall at the 2:05-mark over Delaware Valley's Katie Marin before advancing to the finals with a second-period pinfall (5:18-mark) against East Stroudsburg's Carney Wyble. In the championship bout, she matched against Delaware Valley's Gabby Reid which is the duos fourth meeting this month within the circle. Matera has won the last three meetings but entered the second period of this matchup trailing 1-0. After quickly regaining a 2-1 lead, Matera used a four-point throw within the closing seconds of the match to lock up the 155lb championship match. With under 20 seconds remaining, Reid shot in on a deep double leg, but Matera quickly adjusted locking her hands throwing Reid for the 6-1 decision.

Gavares the No. 3 seed at 101lbs shined for the Bears with a 2-1 record and improved her season record to 13-8. She opened with a 27-second pinfall over Cedar Crest's Lauren Jackson (No.6 seed) and would match up against Lock Haven's Emma Heslin in the semifinals. In their only other previous meeting this season at the Princeton Open, Gavares fell by a 14-3 technical superiority in her season debut. In this matchup between the two grapplers, it featured three lead changes, five four-point maneuvers, and a winning takedown in the final five seconds. Heslin jumped out to a 6-0 advantage within the first minute of action, before Gavares stormed back to regain a 10-6 advantage with 1:11 remaining in the opening period. With under a minute remaining in the period, Heslin tallied back-to-back two-point moves to tie the match at 10 a piece heading into the second stanza. Gavares earned the first four-point move in the second period, before outscoring Heslin 5-2 and extending her lead to 19-12 with 1:19 remaining in the match. Heslin scored eight consecutive points to retake a 20-19 lead, but Gavares tallied the final two-point move with five seconds remaining to earn the 21-20 victory. Unfortunately, in the finals Gavares was upended by East Stroudsburg's Olivia Klein by a 10-0 score to finish in second place.

At 123lbs, Roskos earned a second-place finish behind a 2-1 record and improved her season record to 12-7. After an opening round bye, Roskos used a 6-0 shutout over Lock Havne's Carly Gross to advance to the championship semifinal round. In the semifinals Roskos matched up against a familiar face Delaware Valley's Bridgette Schoultz, which is their fourth time meeting this season and eighth meeting between the two over the last two seasons. Schoultz earned the opening point, but Roskos tallied five consecutive points behind two takedowns to earn the 5-1 victory. In the finals, Roskos would be downed by East Stroudsburg's Mia Macaluso to finish in second place.

In the 143lb bracket, Charlesworth shined for the Bears finishing with a 3-1 record and earning a third-place nod. She opened with a 35-second fall over East Stroudsburg's Angelina Hiller, but fell to a returning all-American and the No. 1 seed Gannon's Lili Ujfalvi via a 10-5 decision. She responded in the consolation bracket, tallying a 57-second fall over York's Rebekah Patzke to reach the third-place bout. Charlesworth would see a rematch against the No. 4 seed ESU's Hiller and behind a strong first period she earned a pinfall victory at the 3:54-mark of the second period. After a string of takedowns, Charlesworth collected two-points before readjusting with arm-bar and collecting her third victory by fall on the day.

Meanwhile for the Bears at 130lbs, Bloomfield dropped her opening match via a 4-3 decision to Lock Haven's Isabella DeVito. She would bounce back in the consolation's recording back-to-back victories to set up a rematch with DeVito in the third-place bout. Bloomfield tallied a pinfall at the 1:30-mark over Delaware Valley's Carmela Velasco before collecting a second-period fall over East Stroudsburg's Gabrielle Baker. In the third-place bout Bloomfield was able to tie the match at 2-2 in the third period but fell via criteria to finish fourth. At 136lbs, Fox finished with a 2-2 record to also earn a fourth-place finish and improve her season record to 11-10. She opened with a 53-second fall over Cedar Crest's Oliva Horninger but fell in the quarterfinals to the No. 1 seed and eventual champion Lock Haven's Madison Matta via pinfall. She bounced back in the consolations with a 10-0 victory by technical superiority over Delaware Valley's Eva Herrera. She advanced to the third-place bout after receiving victory by injury defaults over Gannon's Camryn Brown and East Stroudsburg's Gianna Amendola. In the third-place match, Fox fell to the No. 5 seed ESU's Ruth Ansah by a 12-2 technical superiority.

The Bears will return to action on Sunday, February 4th as they travel to Reading, Pennsylvania for a dual meet against Alvernia University at 5 p.m.
