PRINCETON, N.J. – The Ursinus College women's wrestling team opened their 2024-25 season by competing at the annual Princeton Open on Sunday from Jadwin Gymnasium.
A total of 11 Bears competed for Ursinus with eight of them finishing within the top-eight of their respective weight classes. Sophomore
Cloe Charlesworth paced the Bears lineup by earning the highest finish, placing second at 145lbs.
'The coaching staff is incredibly proud of how the girls wrestled today," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. We more then tripled our win total from last year and it is a lot of fun to see how much we have grown in a short period of time. But more importantly, everyone wrestled whistle to whistle with high energy and great enthusiasm. As coaches we can't ask for much more than that."
Charlesworth opened with a victory by pinfall and technical superiority to reach the semifinals. In her next match, Charlesworth advanced to the finals by defeating Delaware Valley's Olviia Kinder via a decision. The match was tied 8-8 at the end of the final period, with Charlesworth advancing on criteria due to scoring the highest action a four-point move in the first period. Unfortunately, she would fall in the finals via a 12-4 score against MIT's Veloria Pannell.
Sophomore
Gianna Perez (180lbs) and
Paisley Fox (138lbs) recorded fifth place finishes for the Bears, while first-year
Jordan Forsyth (103lbs) and sophomore
Stacy Bloomfield (131lbs) tallied six-place nods. Perez collected a victory by fall in her opening bout over Felician's Julia Urban and later defeated Urban by technical superiority (10-0) in their fifth-place match. Fox dropped her opening bout versus the No. 2 seed and sixth ranked Presbyterian's Paige Wehrmeister via a 10-0 decision, before bouncing back in the consolations with three consecutive victories to reach the consolation semifinals. After a victory by fall, Fox defeated the No. 4 seed MIT's Viveca Pannell via a 17-6 technical superiority. She fell by superiority in the consolation semifinals but responded in the fifth-place bout with a 15-second fall over Hiram's Mallory Chunat.
At 103lbs, Forsyth dropped her opening match versus the No. 4 seed but bounced back with a pinfall over Marymount's Nicole Barahona Rios in the consolation bracket. Forsyth followed up with a 12-2 technical superiority victory over the No. 2 seed Emma Acampora. After a loss to the eventual third-place finisher, Forsyth dropped her fifth-place bout by a 10-0 decision against Rider's Sheila Cortez. For Bloomfield at 131lbs, she dropped her opening bout but responded with three consecutive victories to reach the consolation semifinals. She earned a victory by fall, technical superiority, and a 5-0 decision over No. 3 seed Lockhaven's Isabella Devito highlighted her season debut.
First-years
Emma Sagi (138lbs),
Evette Colon (207lbs), and
Olivia Guy (117lbs) each collected their first collegiate victories on the day.
The Bears will return to action on Sunday, November 10th as they host Cedar Crest College ad Misericordia University for a tri-meet from Helfferich Hall at noon.
