Seven Top-Five Finishes Leads Women's Wrestling at New Standard Invite

YORK, Pa. – Behind seven wrestlers earning top-five finishes, the Ursinus College women's wrestling team placed second at the New Standard Invitational on Saturday afternoon at York College.

Junior Kalli Roskos (124lbs), sophomores Stacy Bloomfield (131lbs), and Emma Matera (160lbs) paced the Bears lineup by earning second place nods in their respective weight classes. Meanwhile, sophomore Mandy Gavares (103lbs) and first-year Olivia Guy (117lbs) each placed third, with first-years Evette Colon (207lbs) and Emma Sagi (138lbs) placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Western New England (38 points) won the team title behind three individual champions, while Ursinus finished in second place with a team tally of 28 points. Baldwin Wallace (20 points) ranked third, Delaware Valley (17) took fourth place, and New England College (16) rounded out the top-five.

"We're very happy with how the women bounced back from our performance at Frostburg State," Director of Wrestling Joe Jamison said. "Finishing second was not the goal, but it's a step in the right direction. This year's field was dramatically tougher than last year, and we improved our placement from third to second despite having to forfeit three weight classes due to some injuries. The women really focused on winning positions and wrestling whistle-to-whistle, and that mindet is beginning to pay off. It wa snot perfect by any means and we have things to work on, but we're headed in the right direction."

At 124lbs, Roskos improved her season record to 6-2 behind a 3-1 day and earned her second consecutive silver medal at the New Standard Invitational. She opened with back-to-back victories by technical superiority over Utica's Rebekah May and Mount Union's Lliana Men-Hartley to reach the semifinals. In her next bout, Roskos defeated Baldwin Wallace's Abby DiCenzo by a 10-0 technical superiority to reach the championship finals. Unfortunately, Roskos fell against the second ranked 124-pounder in Region 1, Utica's Jazmene Molina by a 7-2 decision to finish second.

In the 131lb bracket, Bloomfield tallied a first-period fall over Delaware Valley's Eva Herrera and advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a second round bye. Next, Bloomfield recorded a 10-0 victory by superiority at the 1:19-mark, while an 11-2 decision over Western New England's Abigail Alicandro to reach the championship finals. In the finals, she fell by a fall against New England College's Jaclyn Dehney to earn a second-place finish.

Behind a 2-1 mark at 160lbs, Matera improved her season record to 7-4 and rounded out the three Bears to earn second place finishes in their respective weight classes. In her opening bout, Matera jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over WNE's Charlemarie Jackson and advanced via a victory by injury default. In the semifinals, Matera faced a 2-0 deficit at the first period but rallied off four points in the final period to earn a 4-2 victory by decision over Albion's Brynn Green. Tied 2-2 with under 30 seconds remaining, Matera collected a takedown with 21 seconds left to earn the decision. In the championship bout, Matera fell by fall against WNE's Abiyana Williams (Ranked third in Region 1) to earn silver.

At 103lbs, Gavares opened with a 10-0 victory by superiority at the 0:59-mark over York's Chloe Gross before falling by fall against Delaware Valley's Jesenia Camargo in the semifinals. Camargo is currently ranked second at 103lbs in Region 2 with Gavares ranking third within the weight class. Gavares bounced back with back-to-back victories in the consolations, earning a 13-2 victory before defeating WNE's Gianna Hernandez via a 6-0 decision to place third.

Guy shined at 117lbs for the Bears finishing with a 4-1 record and improving her season record to 10-3. She opened with a fall at the 1:03-mark and advanced to the semifinals by pinning WNE's Hailey Laabs at the 54-second mark of the opening period. Guy faced an early 6-0 deficit before responding with a fall after consecutive two-point maneuvers. After falling to the eventual champion in the semifinals, Guy responded with a 14-4 victory over New Jersey City's Hailey Beck and fall over Cedar Crest's Melanie Val to place third.

Colon recorded a pair of victories of fall and reached the consolation finals to place fourth at 207lbs. She opened with a first-period fall over McDaniel's Rowan Titus and earned her second fall to make the consolation championship with a 51-second pin over Marymount's Kaylee Golighty. At 138lbs, Sagi finished with a 4-2 record including each victory coming via fall to place fifth. In the fifth-place match, Sagi jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before tallying the fall at 1:48-mark over Delaware Valley's Olivia Ball.
